The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
August 2015
From the Church Guy
     Summers fly.  Winters walk.
That's what Linus said to Charlie Brown in the "Peanuts" comic strip, and he was right, of course.  Don't know why, but those short cold days in February and March seem eight times longer than the long warm days of July and August.
So enjoy these days, wherever you are.  Psalm 118 says, "This is the day that the Lord hath made -- we will rejoice and be glad in it."  I must confess that it's easier to read that psalm this time of the year than it is in mid-February!

St. Mark's Summer Picnic
St. Mark's will be at the pavilion of the town park in Port Dickinson on Sunday, August 30, at 11:45.  Father Mark will offer an informal Eucharist, and then we'll eat at noon and enjoy the time to be together.  Sign up on our parish bulletin board.  (We are also asking for a few people to sign up for setup and cleanup!)  Cost is $3 per person and a maximum of $12 per family.  Chicken and beverages will be provided.  Please bring a picnic dish to share, and your own place settings.  Come for the fun!
Ramp It Up!
For the seventh year in a row, our teens will build a wheelchair ramp for a family who really needs it.  Our project is scheduled for August 29.  Our teens will be led by Father Mark, Dave Gridley, Dave Surgent, Eric Laine I, Jeff Jacobs and Ben Reid.  It's always great to see our young people working their hearts out for such a good cause.
The cause is the Ramp It Up Youth Initiative of the Broome County Council of Churches, and St. Mark's has been strongly involved since this program began seven years ago.  Three cheers for the Vestry's decision earlier this year to give $2,000 from our mission budget to the Council of Churches to cover the cost of the lumber and materials!
 Book Club Update
August will find local author, Therese Walsh, visiting the group to discuss her book, THE MOON SISTERS.  In the novel, family ties are stretched to their limits as the sisters try to come to terms with the loss of their mother.  Jazz, logical and forward thinking is looking forward to a new job while Olivia is determined to travel to the remote destination of her mother's unfinished novel to lay her spirit to rest.
Attention All Bad Girls and Those Who Want To Be
We will be starting our sessions on Wednesday, October 7th, at Bob Peterson's house at 8 Poplar Hill Road.  Bob has been most gracious in offering such a wonderful and intimate space in which to  continue our studies.
The topic for this fall is afterlife, and we have chosen two books on which to base our discussions.  They are Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander, M.D. and Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent.  Our last session will be November 18th.
This is a fascinating subject to explore and it will generate much lively discussion.  Please join us in our exciting endeavor.
