Psalm 8:3, 4 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! ... When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?...
"O LORD, OUR LORD, HOW EXCELLENT IS YOUR NAME . . ." (1)
In recent years atheism has become more bold. The author of a best-selling book, "The God Delusion," is quoted as saying: "I am attacking God, all gods, anything and everything supernatural, whenever and wherever they have been or will be invented . . ." The writer stands self-indicted by the first verse of another Davidic psalm which reads, "The fool has said in his heart, There is no God . . ." (Psalm 14:1).
Atheists are "fools" not only because they deny the revealed knowledge of God in the Bible, but because they are blind and deaf to the natural knowledge of God all around them in the world, as yet another psalm of David teaches: "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. . ." (19:1-2; cf. also Romans 1:20).
On a clear night the shepherd lad David would look at the stars and say, "Who am I compared with the grandeur of God's creation?" Here in Psalm 8, under guidance of the Holy Spirit, he writes: "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained . . . What is man that You are mindful of him? . . ."
Indeed, the glory and majesty of the Lord, our Creator-Redeemer God, is clearly evident in the universe He created.
Beautiful Savior, King of Creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I'd love Thee, Truly I'd serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my Joy, my Crown.
Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be Thine!
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 657:1, 4)
