Art Below unveil Peace Plinth in Los Angeles
|
We are proud to announce that the ‘Plinth of Peace’, which stood on London’s Parliament Square since 2009 has been unveiled in Los Angeles at the opening event of The BritWeek T4C (“Thank You For Creating”) Artists Competition at the historic Farmers and Merchants Bank on 12 April 2012, coinciding with Downtown LA Art Walk that attracts over 40,000 visitors each month.
The 3 metre wide by 2 metre tall plinth will stand for a period of 2 weeks as a central feature of BritWeek’s 2012 Art Programme.
|
Since November 2010 we have been working with Peace campaigner and founder of the plinth Maria Gallastegui to encourage artists to present works that promote peace and an end to war. The plinth has attracted attention from national press featuring the works of artists including 3D Prop maker Schoony, Street Artist T.W.A.T., Portraiture artist Johan Andersson, photographer Emma Stoner, and performance art by ArtWars.
Now, for the first time ever, the LA art loving audience will be given special access to see this engaging work - a testament to this time of conflict that we are living in.
This is the first piece of Public Art we have installed in the city of Los Angeles, and follows on from our most recent ‘Art Below Pop Up’ in New Orleans where we occupied billboards around the city with international artists work throughout February to co-inside with Mardi Gras. See images below.

Johan Andersson's Stolen Faces at Englefield House
|
|
May 11th 2012, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
The Long Gallery of Englefield House will host a seminal arts event, the climax of artist Johan Andersson’s first formal series of portraits: STOLEN FACES.
STOLEN FACES challenges preconceptions of beauty and identity; seeking to give representation and visibility to those who do not conform to the artificial and image conscious. Andersson encourages viewers to confront their preconceptions of identity in a manner that is uniquely uncompromising.
STOLEN FACES has been a 15 month project that has toured throughout the USA and the UK. The venue for the ultimate solo show is the exclusive private Long Gallery, where the paintings of individuals marginalised by contemporary society will replace 17th century portraits of prominent aristocracy; breaking the tradition of centuries. The venue was carefully selected to amplify Andersson’s already powerful narrative. Englefield House is an outstanding Elizabethan stately home situated on a 20,000 acre estate, privately owned by the Benyon family. The house has been featured in films such as The King's Speech, Match Point and X-Men First Class. Queen Elizabeth I once visited the Long Gallery, which was later remodeled by the famous Neo-Classical architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837).
The STOLEN FACES portraits include Edo (Bosnian shrapnel-bomb survivor), Soloman (albino male), Maxime (Brazillian-born transsexual artist), Ora (65 year-old woman who has undergone extensive cosmetic surgery), Nadia (born without her arm), Randy (scarred during a childhood accident and left without an eye), Hank (carpenter with extensive facial tattoos), Jocelyn & Annie (one has facial disfigurement, the other an ex-girlfriend), Joanna (lady with large facial birth mark on face), Amanda (with cleft palate). The majority of Andersson’s subjects live and work in the UK where in other parts of the world their disfigurements might pose a hindrance.
A public auction of the entire STOLEN FACES series will take place at the opening of the exhibition in the Long Gallery by Terence Rodrigues (formerly of Christie's) on Friday 11th May at 6pm. The sold pieces will continue to be exhibited, in support of the Newbury Spring Festival, until 18th May. In publicly auctioning his first formal series, Andersson is breaking all the conventions by which young artists are expected to adhere, making a personal contribution in the effort to shake-up and redefine the art industry.
The launch of STOLEN FACES at Englefield House on May 11th heralds the start of the 34th Newbury Spring Festival (12-26 May). In a nod to this prestigious classical music, literature and theatre festival, the classically trained and rapidly emerging singer-songwriter King Charles will perform a set at the opening event on the Long Gallery’s stage before and after the auction. A percentage of proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust and the Newbury Spring Festival.

Breathe life into our Facebook group and win a poster space on the on the London Underground to show your work.
|
|
It may have come to your attention recently that Facebook are either upgrading the old facebook groups into the new design, or they will be 'archived'.
Well this has come as 'a big smack in the face' for Art Below who have had a facebook group since 2006 and have gradually built a healthy and active following of a few thousand. Now, thanks to Facebook 'archiving' our group we have a group of exactly 10 members!! So First of all I want to say a genuine 'thank you' to those 10 dedicated members for hanging on in there.
So in an attempt to claw our way back and to co-inside with Social Media Week, we have decided to launch a new initiative to breathe life and love into this once powerful mother ship of social media! For every 1000 new members, Art Below will award 1 free poster space (1m x 1.5m) on the London Underground. To grab a chance of winning that poster space, simply become a member of the Art Below facebook group and upload a piece of your own artwork onto the Wall. We are open to all creative backgrounds including design, fashion, illustration, sculpture, photography and any other ones that I've missed out.
For every 1000 new group members we will set a loose theme, starting with the theme of THE DIGITAL AGE. Here's one I did earlier! We will take into account how many 'likes' each image gets, but it wont be the central deciding factor that will persuade our judges (to be announced) if you are the winner. As well as being awarded a 1 meter x 1.5 meter poster space in a London Underground station for 2 weeks to show your work, you will also receive a A2 lambda print of your winning design, you will be announced as the winner on www.artbelow.org.uk, on our media partners sites including ArtLyst.com, and ArtRabbit.com and of course on the Art Below facebook group site!
