Rose Windows - Chris Cheveyo – lead guitar/composer, Rabia Shaheen Qazi – lead vocalist, Richie Rekow – bass/ 1st male vocalist, Nils Petersen – rhythm guitar/2nd male vocalist, Pat Schowe – drums,
David Davila – piano/organ, Veronica Dye – flute- have been stunning live audiences in the greater Pacific Northwest and beyond, with their engaging, otherworldly performances.
The Sun Dogs is an album based on the idea of sifting through the past, extracting bits and pieces, and re-imagining these into new forms. It’s about observing and building upon musical traditions. Thematically, Cheveyo describes The Sun Dogs as being about “the everyday blues that capitalism and its hit man, religion, bring on all of us.” More specifically, he sees The Sun Dogs as an acknowledgment of the circular nature of the rat race, learning to accept the evil in the world, taking joy wherever we can, and ultimately disavowing traditions of exploitation and violence. That search for finding light in the dark is perfectly captured in the album opener “The Sun Dogs I: Spirit Modules,” as the ominous verses uncoil into beautifully lush string arrangements and vocal harmonies. “Native Dreams” displays the band’s affinity for both exotic melodies and bold distorted guitar riffs, all while Qazi describes the encroachment of one culture upon another by singing of “spirit warriors” surrounding a sleeping camp. “Walkin’ With a Woman” conjures the old blues tale of encountering the devil at the crossroads while culling motifs from classic psych and prog records. Songs like “Heavenly Days” and “Season of Serpents” offer a counterpoint to the foreboding moments on The Sun Dogs, with folk-steeped guitars, gentle pedal steel, and graceful choruses painting a picture of those moments of joy and grace in the midst of the world’s evil. These moments of respite make the foreign melodies, menacing mysticism, and blown-out riffs on songs like “This Shroud” all the more disquieting. But ultimately “The Sun Dogs II: Coda” ends the album with a ray of light, with the alternating major and minor chords on acoustic guitar, lilting piano lines, “Kashmir”-esque strings, and full-band vocal harmonies burning off the gloom.
Sixth Station
Deep Night

A raw cry from the dark night of one man’s soul. Cloistered away from the popular culture of 1982, rural Illinois priest Tony Trosley painted a pastoral refraction of early 1970s Laurel Canyon watercolors with this stand-alone set of songs. The Sixth Station—named for a grim New Testament tableau in which Veronica washes the tortured face of Jesus—managed to avoid overtly Christian themes in favor of a mystical Humanism that resonates timelessly, and to any sort of listener. This Deep Night is as profound and eerie as the images conjured by its title.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, guitar-wielding men of the cloth came somewhat into vogue. Brother Juniper, Father Tom Belt, and the St. Louis Jesuits each found modest success with their takes on liturgical folk music. Born in 1951, Father Tony Trosley trod out of this tradition to arrive in quite a different place. Raised in the St. Louis area, Trosley entered the seminary immediately after high school. It was there that he took up guitar and set out on a musical sojourn that would result in an LP more than a decade later.Assigned to a parish in Peoria, Illinois, Trosley charted his long course toward Deep Night, adding crew along the way to fill out the recordings. Deep Night’s title cut is its purest moment, featuring Trosley alone and transparent, his 12-string tone shaped by a phaser pedal. The entire album, tracked in a tiny chapel with rented equipment over one extended evening, was mixed live with only a handful of overdubs. A few disastrous live performances around Central Illinois sealed the album’s fate as a one-off, though producer Scott McDaniel proposed a second LP. Father Tony Trosley, cloistered as he was from popular music culture of the day, could hardly avoid recording a folk and rock anachronism, but the sound of Deep Night defies placement on any timeline, aural or historical. It is every bit as darkly profound and eerie as its name implies.

Originally released in 2010 via Rice is Nice, this is the first time the record will be available in the UK/EU with the first 500 copies of (250 LP and 250 CD) coming with a bonus CD of old singles, demos, and live scuzz….
Recorded within the realms of MEDIUM FIDELITY at HANGING TREE - Tim Done’s home/studio/archaic equipment museum - using all the 1950s equipment available has resulted in a record where almost all the instruments can be heard. Add in Brent Griffin/SPOD to the mix with his injection of fuzzed out reverberating budget psychedelia and IT’S HAPPENING! was born.
Straight Arrows began with Owen Penglis yelling about getting dumped and kicked out of bands into a four-track cassette. He was soon joined by Alex Grigg,Angela Bermuda and Adam Williams - all friends with colourful musical pasts.
Slowly the four honed their reverb-laden, fuzzed out, punk garage into scrappy perfection. Finding it tough to get shows, Straight Arrows went down the DIY path and decided to put on their own raucous parties at New South Wales’ notorious (and now abandoned) gay bar, The Newtown Hotel. Around the same time they put out their first 7” ‘Something Happens/Can’t Count’ on their newly formed label Juvenile Records.
Figuring the only way to sell these records (and make their money back) was to force them, photocopied sleeve ‘n all, into the hands of drunks and connoisseurs.Straight Arrows started driving up and down the east coast of Australia, playing parties, warehouses, bars - wherever they could - and in the process gained an outstanding reputation for being ‘‘the band that will make you start your own band’’.
By late 2010 Straight Arrows sold out two more 7s, toured with friends Thee Oh SeesEddy Current Suppression RingThe Black LipsJay Reatard(RIP) and Ty Segall amongst others and released their debut album It’s Happening to a flood of praise, landing them an invite to perform at the Goner Fest in Memphis, Tennessee playing alongside garage punk royalty The Gories.
Bands began to queue-up for Owen Penglis to record and produce their music at his home studio and in 2012 Owen produced and recorded the who’s who of Sydney / Brisbane Garage scene for the 40th Anniversary tribute album to the seminal Nuggets compilation, originally compiled by Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith band).
Last year Straight Arrows showcased at Brisbane’s Big Sound where they blew minds and ranked in nearly every Top 5 “Best Bands at Big Sound” list. The legendary Hoodoo Gurus enlisted them to be part of the amazing Dig It Up Festival, while Sydney tastemakers GoodGod Small Club asked the band to join their curated stage at Vivid Festival at the Sydney Opera House.
Having already headlined Sydney Town Hall as part of Sydney Festival this year, Straight Arrows will release their follow up to IT’S HAPPENING! via Agitated later in the year.
