Next Wednesday is our chance to see just how creative BPS members can be when we hold the annual Creative Competition, which this year is being judged by Barry Mead FRPS, EFIAP/d3, MPAGB, APAGB. As most of you will know, Barry is one of our regular Zoomers, so will be beaming his comments into the clubrooms direct from Mead Towers via Zoom. However, he will already have seen the images & prints in the flesh prior to the meeting.
After the Creative Competition is over, we will be presenting the hardware that has been won by members throughout the 2022-23 season. Please see below the list of awards due to be presented on the evening:
|
|
After the Creative Competition and award presentations, Barry will give a short talk on his work. This will be selection of his creative work all of which include a figure or portrait taken it the clubroom studio space over the last 7 years. By showing these images, Barry hopes to encourage more people to make use of the superb facility we have at BPS.
Below are a few examples of what we can expect to see: |

After a fair bit of prodding and poking, members finally submitted a sufficient number of responses to the questionnaire sent out a couple of weeks ago, to enable Jay to plan for the 2 August. The upshot of this is that the "outing" on 2 August will be street photography in the old part of Bristol. Final details and meeting point will be published closer the date.

BPS member, Mark Gilbert, has sent me a link that he reckons fellow members will find funny. It features Tony Hancock, a comedian familiar to older members, but who younger members should also find funny, it will also show the younger ones among us that it is possible to have a comedy program without a continuous stream of profanities and with everyone shouting (crikey, I sound like my mother!).

15-16 July: Bristol Harbour Festival
From the City Museum:
This July sees Bristol's yearly celebration of the city's maritime heritage and showcases the importance of the docks and Floating Harbour. Celebrate with us by taking a ride on one of M Shed's largest working exhibits. Take a spin on our famous steam train along Bristol Harbour Railway or jump on one of our impressive boats for a trip around the docks. The working exhibits will be running on both Saturday and Sunday of the festival.
See which working exhibits are running for Bristol Harbour Festival here. |

Mike (Martin) has been contacted by a couple of models offering the opportunity to work on location or in the studio – as below:
Darcy Smith – 22 July
Some of you may have already worked with Darcy having attended a BPS session following a shoot with the Photographers with Disabilities in May.
Darcy comes from Devon but is planning to travel to Bristol on 22 July.
Her modelling rate is £35 per hour either 1:2:1 or for a small group (sharing the cost). I’d suggest for practical reasons a minimum of a 2 hour slot to allow for a change of looks.
Contact Mike Martin if you’d like to photograph Darcy, giving your preference for:
- 1:2:1 or a group
- with Mike assisting or on your own
- preference for location in Bristol (and suggestions) or studio
Mike will try and co-ordinate the day to best match your needs.
Photoshoot – Azadeh Safei – between 26 – 30 August Mike worked with Azadeh a few years ago. You may recognise her from one of Mike’s creative images. Azadeh is based in Southampton, but is travelling to Bristol over the bank holiday, so this is an opportunity to work with her and avoid her travelling costs. Her modelling rates are £150 for a half day or £250 for a full day. This includes choice of outfits from her extensive (and mildly bonkers!) wardrobe as well as make-up and hair so no MUA is needed.
Contact Mike Martin if you’d like to photograph Azadeh, giving your preference for:
- date
- 1:2:1 or a group
- half day / full day
- with Mike assisting or on your own
- preference for studio, or suggestions for a location
- any specific outfit(s) you’d like to photograph
Mike will try and co-ordinate to best match your needs.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
