Abolished – The role of a dedicated Disability Discrimination Commissioner
  Wednesday 21 May 2014

Dear ,

You may have heard that the Australian Government announced as part of its Budget that there will be a reduction in the number of dedicated Commissioners at the Australian Human Rights Commission from seven to six.

The Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Mr Graeme Innes finishes his term on 30 June 2014.  This means that the dedicated role of Disability Discrimination Commissioner will be abolished at this time, and it is likely that these responsibilities will be combined with another Commissioner.

People with Disability Australia (PWDA) is very concerned about what this decision might mean for protecting people with disability against discrimination and for strong leadership on the rights of people with disability within Government.  PWDA has voiced our concerns to the Attorney-General, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC, and will continue to publicly express our opposition to the loss of a dedicated Disability Discrimination Commissioner.

PWDA President, Craig Wallace strongly argues our views in today’s Ramp Up article 'Disability discrimination to end on June 30?'.

A number of PWDA members and supporters would like to know what they can do.  You can express your concerns and share your stories about discrimination in a number of ways.
  • Speak out by leaving your comments on today's Ramp Up article 'Disability discrimination to end on June 30?' by PWDA President Craig Wallace.

  • Send a letter to The Attorney-General, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC and express your concerns in writing about this decision to abolish this important role of Disability Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission. Address your letter to: Senator the Hon George Brandis QC, PO Box 6100, Senate, Parliament House, CANBERRA ACT 2600.
  • Ring into your local talk back radio station and tell your stories.
