Mozambique—Restoring and Creating
Jewish Community

Larry and Diane Herman lived in Maputo, Mozambique for most of 16 years, from 2000 through 2016. As observant Conservative/Masorti Jews they discovered an historic but tiny Jewish community dating from the late 19th century. Working with the small permanent Jewish community and more numerous temporary residents from the international community, they helped to reestablish Honen Dalim, the formal Jewish presence in Maputo, reconstruct the synagogue building, and organized regular Shabbat and holiday services and celebrations.

They will describe their experiences and how it has shaped their views of Jewish community in a presentation at TBA on Sunday, January 29 at 11 am in the Dorf-Nelson Chapel
