Wednesday 28 June

Next Wednesday we are being treated to a talk by BPS member, Simon Caplan LRPS, who will be presenting his talk called quizzically "Extraordinary Ordinary".

This talk will show the many striking urban detail and abstract images he discovers hidden in otherwise everyday settings and mundane locations. In his talk ‘Extraordinary Ordinary’ Simon offers ideas on how photographers might see and think differently - using the camera as a creative tool to find unusual images where many might least expect to do so.
In addition to his digital presentation of over 100 colourful and impactful images, Simon will also share with members several mounted prints, supporting his view that the printed image is the best way to present your work...even in the digital age.

Simon will also briefly share his enjoyment of other kinds of photography – including classic still life; portraiture and landscape work: illustrating his assertion that no photographer needs to be a one trick pony and that variety is surely the spice of life.

The talk has been well received at clubs throughout the South West and as far afield as London, the Welsh Valleys and Yorkshire over recent years and it aims to provide an entertaining and inspiring evening for photographers new and old.

More about Simon:
Born and brought up in North London, Simon moved to Bristol in 2000. He has been developing his photographic skills for the last 15 years or so and has been able to give it greater focus since retiring early from a successful career in public relations and communications. Simon is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society – a distinction secured with a panel of shots that arose from time spent photographing traditional artisans at work across Britain. He is (slowly) working towards a panel to submit for his Associateship of the RPS. Simon is also a judge on the Western Counties Photographic Federation’s panel.

More of his output can be found online at www.simoncaplanphotography.co.uk with regularly updated work at www.flickr.co.uk/photography/simoncaplan

Creative Competition - Closing Date
Closing date next Wednesday 28 June

Entries for this competition, both projected images and prints, must be made in the usual way. For PDIs the filename must include your class level. Whilst that is not needed for the competition itself, it is needed for image processing.

Entrants are reminded of the rules specific to this competition:

For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.

  • This is an Open competition, with no levels of entry.
  • Images may have been entered into any previous club competition and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual competition, other than this one.
  • The Trophy winner will not be eligible to enter the next two Creative Competitions.
  • Each entrant may submit up to three images. These may be all PDI, all Print or any combination of the two.
  • The judge will select a Best PDI, a Best Print and award the Bob Faris trophy to one of these two.

For convenience the judge this year is the winner of last year’s competition, Barry Mead. That expectation is not set in stone; however, entrants should not feel constrained by the inevitability of judging if they win this time round!

Distinctions Advisory Workshop

The next Distinctions Advisory Workshop will take place at Unit 13 next Monday, 26 June, starting at 19:30. The advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS, Andrew Marker FRPS and Ralph Snook ARPS.

This workshop will be aimed at prints only and is mainly for members thinking of an RPS distinction. However, although the evening will be aimed at RPS distinctions, any advice will clearly be useful if you are thinking of submitting for a PAGB Distinction.

Future workshops will vary in content, including specific advice on PAGB Distinctions and digital submissions.

If you are interested in this workshop, please get in touch making sure that you include all three of the following:

Annual Print Competition
Last Wednesday saw the running of this year's Annual Print Competition which was judged by John Chamberlin FRPS MFIAP. John gave us a masterclass in judging, commenting on 100+ prints and finishing bang on time - well done and thanks to John for this mammoth task.
