Mastering, what i think about it. Toby Mattsson

For me the aim should be about quality control, a new set of years, that the mixer really, at one point, want to hear say.
"I don´t want to change a thing with this song"

In reality it never happens and never should. Mastering Engineers get good at getting levels (and have stellar equipment) and volume always wins. Yes i think this statement is true, it wins over everything but distortion.

It´s a fine, fine, fine line between a song with enough level to go places and a pice of crap that no one can stand to listen to several times to make it a hit. Yes marketing can make crap float and sometimes ridiculously long but to really last people must stand the unpleasant stress that listening to severely loud /distorted songs give.

So if something is very wrong with the mix, remix it. In order to get the level where you want it to be, you need to "share the loud" a bit of e.q and compression (or level automation) at every step along the way. Start mixing your song as soon as you have 2 tracks down. Remember! not everything can be loud all the time! dynamics, real or artificial is what makes a song interesting.
