Welcome to our New Board Member
Stephan Claes, KULeuven, Belgium

Stephan Claes obtained his MD degree at the K.U. Leuven in 1992. From 1993 to 1997, he was a PhD student at the Center for Human Genetics (K.U. Leuven) with prof. J.J. Cassiman as his promotor, studying the localization of genetic factors for X-linked mental retardation. He obtained his PhD degree on Dec 5th 1997. Meanwhile, he continued his studies in psychiatry, and became a psychiatrist in July 1999.
From 1999 to 2005, Stephan Claes was a staff member of the Psychiatry Department (headed by prof. P. Cosyns) at the University Hospitals of Antwerp, Belgium, and a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Molecular Genetics (VIB8), headed by prof. C. Van Broeckhoven. In 2005, Stephan Claes returned to Leuven University, where he is currently Professor of Psychiatry. Furthermore he is the chair of the Department of Adult Psychiatry at the University Hospitals Leuven,  and a Senior Clinical Researcher of the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders (FWO - Vlaanderen). His research activities focus on the role of stress and the biological stress response in psychiatric disorders, and on the underlying genetic factors.

Stephan Claes is currently the president of the Belgian College for Neuropsychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, which aims at educating mental health professionals in the neurobiological background of psychiatric disorders. He is convinced that the Master in Affective Neuroscience is an outstanding forum to achieve the same goal, and is honored to be able to contribute to this excellent program by becoming member of the Board.
