 Did You Know?

Cats meow for their humans, not for other cats.

Domesticated cats have evolved alongside humans long enough to know that certain sounds and tones will cause us to respond to them. They communicate with different meows to get us to feed them, comfort them, and even adopt them. They rarely meow to each other.

The Kitty Times is Moving!

Mostly, I'm the one who's moving. The Kitty Times will come with me, of course, along with my own kitties and the dog. After I relocate from Nebraska to Arizona this month, I plan to make a few other changes. Not because I want to, but I will have to. The newsletter will be published using a service through Mail Chimp, and my internet connection will change to satellite.

I also plan to change publication to the first of the month. My hope, of course, is that things will work better. I'm a realist, though, so I will believe it when I see it myself. I hope things go smoothly and that you can continue to read the Kitty Times conveniently and without any glitches. Be sure to notify me if anything doesn't go as planned or expected at your end.

This issue, then, will probably be the last one to arrive using the service I've used since 2005. Once I'm set up in my new home, I will enter a new chapter in my life, and the next Kitty Times will be the new version you see on June 1.

Helping Quarantined Pets Be On Their Best Behavior

The tips in this article are focused on how to make a pet feel comfortable while being fostered temporarily. But the same advice can apply to pets you've had for a long time and don't plan to surrender. Things have changed so much in our lives now, even well-adjusted pets can develop emotional, behavioral and cognitive changes.

According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), "More and more people are stepping up to help their local shelters, and we want these valuable volunteers to have good experiences. However, we're sending a wider variety of dogs and cats into foster homes than ever before, including animals with some behavioral challenges."

Regarding cats in particular:

We must help foster-cat families succeed by teaching newcomer pet guardians how to set up their homes to achieve best results. The following video series includes everything from setting up the home to safety tips that help acclimate kitties to a new environment.

New CDC Guidelines to keep your pets safe from COVID-19
(How worried about this should you be?)

As of now, the CDC says there is “no evidence” that pets play a role in spreading COVID-19 in the U.S. However, the agency acknowledges there’s a lot that scientists still don’t know at the moment. “Further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals, including pets, could be affected,” the guidelines say.
