Hello and welcome to the official St. Margaret’s House Settlement newsletter for July.

June's event line-up saw us showcase a diverse assortment of art and performance with last weekend’s successful ‘It’s All Happening’ festival icing the cake nicely.  Next month’s line-up is similarly brimming, with all of our usual events back on the programme and the beginning of our Summer Series in the garden.

Gallery Cafe
Comings and Goings
This month the café waves goodbye to both Larissa and Chris and we wish them the best of luck as they go globetrotting. Fiona is welcomed as newly appointed Café Supervisor and she will work to consolidate the café’s green reputation in her additional new position as Environmental Officer.

Sp-eco-ing of which...
All of the Gallery Café’s coffee is supplied and cycled to us weekly by Nude Espresso, located on Brick Lane and roasting beans fresh from Monday-Friday. Our delicious bread is whizzed over to us by The E5 Bakehouse who use organic, locally sourced ingredients. We aim to use even more local suppliers in the future.

Create Place Update
Game For a Laugh
Originally from Northumberland, Gladys Cooper has lived in Bethnal Green from the tender age of 21. She ran the Bingo at Our Lady of the Assumption church for 12 years when more than 40 women attended before moving across the road to the Create Place. These days, there are 12 women from Tower Hamlets who meet frequently to enjoy the game as well as the company of their gaming peers. Next week the lotto loving ladies are heading off towards Great Yarmouth for a holiday proving that you’re never too old to have fun. Group activities such as Bingo give elderly people the opportunity to socialise locally in a friendly environment and it's admirable people like Gladys who make this possible.

Maggie’s Soapbox is a new monthly occurrence brought to you by the Create Place aiming to bring creative minds together amid a melting pot of short, unique presentations that may shed light on subjects as odd and unusual as ‘What happens to whales after they perish’. It's a great opportunity to learn something new, meet some interesting people and have a good old guffaw and a beer. If you think you or someone you know would like to present in the July event then please e-mail thecreateplace@stmargaretshouse.org.uk.
  Introducing...
As part of Winant Clayton Volunteers’ historic annual exchange programme, St Margaret’s House Settlement is pleased to welcome Sylvie Douglis from Boston, US, who’ll be helping with a range of duties at The Create Place and Ayoka until mid August. She is currently developing a summer scheme for kids in collaboration with St. John’s School.

Art at Ayoka

Our boutique charity shop, Ayoka, held its first in what we hope will be a series of exciting monthly private views last Wednesday, bringing culture and colour into our shop. Artist, Avaneya, whose influences include worldly traditions, philosophy and myth, paints surreal abstracts with a primitive undercurrent. Pop in for a look if you get the chance. 15% of the painterly proceeds will go back into St Margaret’s House.
Ayoka has launched a competition to propose and install a summer window display with a Gallery Cafe meal for two for the winning entrant. Look out for competition posters in the café and please do pass the word around to local creatives who may be interested. Entries may be e-mailed to comms@stmargaretshouse.org.uk.
Donate
As always, we welcome good-quality donations of clothing, shoes, books and home wares all of which are greatly appreciated.
