ANNIE LOWREY Give People Money: How a Universal Basic Income Would End Poverty, Revolutionize Work, and Remake the World
Monday, July 23 at 7 PM
Meet Annie Lowrey, economics writer and contributing editor to The Atlantic, who will discuss her provocative new book, Give People Money.
Lowrey takes a global look at universal basic income (UBI) - a stipend given to every citizen - and why it might be necessary in an age of rising inequality, persistent poverty, and high technology. Imagine if the government deposited $1,000 into your bank account every month, with nothing expected in return. Sounds crazy, but this has become one of the most influential and hotly debated policy ideas of our time. Lowrey examines the UBI movement from many angles, and explores the potential of such a sweeping policy and the challenges the movement faces.

What does growing up poor do to your self-esteem? How do patterns of stress and family violence, poor diet and poor health continue to affect you even after you escape to a higher income bracket? And what can one woman do to turn around the cycle of racism, poverty, and inter-generational suffering?
Join us as author Saeeda Hafiz gives a frank account of the anxiety and rewards of becoming "middle class" through a complete change of diet and adopting habits such as traveling and doing yoga. While her peers pursue one kind of African American dream by climbing the corporate ladder, Hafiz finds meaning in learning to cook macrobiotic food and practice meditation.
