Boards Need "Affirmative Action" to Mentor Effective Boardroom Inclusion
(December 13) While the global need for stronger corporate board diversity and inclusion has become a hot topic, solid results (and tools for making it happen) remain scarce. In the December issue of online monthly Boardroom INSIDER, however, publisher and global business speaker Ralph Ward suggests one tactic that can help nudge inclusive boardrooms a bit closer to reality.
While diverse board candidates offer fresh thinking and insights, “what they don’t bring is boardroom experience.” How boards actually work, meeting prep, duties, and working with management as a director will be mysteries to younger, “affirmative action” board prospects. Pitching them in without added mentoring and seasoning “sets them up for Imposter Syndrome failures,” Ward warns. He encourages a program of pairing the novice with a board mentor early on, helping them build career skills that aim toward boardroom effectiveness, and added exposure to board meetings well in advance. “Ask yourself what you wish you’d know before your own boardroom debut.”
