Next Wednesday we welcome Heidi Stewart who will be presenting her talk My Journey So Far.
Mother, wife and photography nut. Her interest and love of photography started at a very young age when she was given a Kodak Instamatic camera with Magicube flash technology - Wow! She was hooked. At the age of 16 she left school to start work at a professional photographic lab, printing school and commercial photographs and just a few months later she bought her trusty Olympus OM10.
|
|
The lab was also where she met her husband Alec, whose passion and enthusiasm for photography was and still is as great as hers. Well, they got hitched and along came 3 wonderful children, so her photography took a back seat for a while. That is until she joined Gwynfa Camera Club in South Wales in 2010. It was then that she really started taking her photography more seriously and to a whole new level and realised her true passion was for landscape photography. She loves nothing more than to be outdoors photographing the landscape and anything in it and now owns and uses a Canon 5D Mll. Her talk 'My Journey So Far' shows you many of the wonderful places she has visited within the UK, both local and further afield. It isn't just landscapes though – portraits, candids, natural history and fun pics are included too! So, something for everyone to enjoy.

WCPF Interclub Print Competition |
Several members of BPS travelled to Dorchester last weekend to see the judging of the inaugural WCPF Interclub Print Competition. 39 clubs from across the federation each entering a set of 15 prints, which were judged by a panel of 3 judges (Glyn Edmunds, Jean Brooks and Caroline Colegate). Judging was much the same as at the Bristol Salon and other internationals, with each judge allocating a score of between 3 and 5 points to each print, producing a maximum of 15. Owing to the large number of prints being judged (585) there is no time for discussion, so the judges score using electronic number pads, with the scores being automatically recorded on a computer - at the end of the day the scores are totalled and the winning clubs announced.
It was a close-run thing with the top 3 clubs covered by just 3 points, sadly BPS was just one point behind the eventual winners, Torbay Photographic Society, the top 3 clubs were
- Torbay Photographic Society 182 points
- Bristol Photographic Society 182 points
- Dorchester Camera Club 180 points
Which means that Torbay and Bristol will go on to represent WCPF at the PAGB Interclub Print Championship to be held in October.
Well done to Graham Pears who gained a Judge's personal Commendation with his print Boxing Hares and to Mike Martin who also gained a Judge's personal Commendation with his print Summers Gone

EISA Photo Maestro 2019 Awards |
A big thank you to all who voted for Steve Field in the recent EISA Photo Maestro 2019 Awards. This competition, run across 29 member countries, was for a panel of between 5 and 8 images on the theme Power. Steve won the UK round and has now been told that he has won the Peoples Vote across all 29 countries - well done Steve. Below is one of Steve's winning images, click here to see all of Steve's winning images.
I'm sorry, but my schoolboy sense of humour took over and I had to reproduce one of the other winning images from Markku Pajunen of Finland on the theme of alternative means of power:

At present we are endeavouring to produce an up to date Risk Assessment for Unit 13 & BPS. Whilst going through the requirements for this, it occurred to us that we would probably benefit from having qualified First-Aiders in our number.
We are looking, therefore, for volunteers to be our official "go to" First-Aiders. If you think that you can help in this, please either email Jeff Hargreaves or me, email addresses as below:

There are still spaces left on the annual photography course, could you please spread the word about the course, both by word of mouth and by social media. Below is a picture advertising the course which you might like to download by clicking on the picture and include in your Facebook (other social media sites are available) page. Alternatively, you could download and print the poster and display it in places local to you. It's worth mentioning that the course fee also includes a year's membership of the Society.
Please remember, that the low cost of your BPS subscription can only remain that way for as long as we continue to get a good attendance (and therefore income) on the course. We would ask, therefore, that as many members as possible help to publicise the course. |
If you have anything to sell, or you're looking for something to buy, just let me know and I'll include it here. Please bear in mind, we only advertise items for BPS members.
|
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
