HARROGATE GEM N BEAD FAIR REPORT

Our first show of the year was disappointing. Spoilt by the weather – heavy snow Saturday, and a storm Sunday. At least we were busy Saturday morning. The snow was so bad, one exhibitor had to book a local hotel in case they couldn’t get home Saturday. I love the snow: but bad for business!

The next Harrogate show is back to the summer, on 20th-21st August – so should be better then. I hope there’s not another storm this weekend in London!

ST PATRICK’S DAY BEADS

What Is St Patrick’s Day?
St Patrick’s Day is Thursday 17th March 2022. It’s a festival for St Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland, started by the Church in 1631.

What’s It Got To Do With Beading?
If you sell jewellery, you need to grasp any opportunity to market your designs. Special dates like this are great for limited edition jewellery because they’re not available all year – and therefore have a sense of exclusivity and urgency.

Best Way To Promote
Drive up excitement in advance before you release your St Patrick’s designs, so the anticipation creates demand. As the festival holds parties and events all over the Western World, market jewellery that makes the wearer stand out. Think bright green, bold necklace, earrings and bracelets.

Why Is Green The Colour For St Patrick?
Green is in the Irish flag, and symbolises the Emerald Isle and Irish nationalism. Wearing green on St Patrick’s day is said to prevent you being pinched by leprechauns, who won’t be able to see you in this colour!

AQUAMARINE – MARCH’S GEMSTONE

Aquamarine is March’s stone – a blue-green gemstone from South America, meaning Water of the Sea. Aquamarine lifts spirit, and excellent for meditation, bringing peace and serenity. Use it for your spring jewellery designs.

Folklore says it protects sailors’ and is the treasure of mermaids. The gemstone is also supposed to have powers that reach to land too, helping married couples solve their problems and drive off evil.

Aquamarine is associated with the thymus gland and is very soothing worn as a necklace. Also thought to help coughs and calm the nerves. The Romans used aquamarine for stomach troubles and believed it could cure liver and throat problems. Aquamarine brings courage, aids quick intellectual response, and protecting the aura.

Colour ranges from a light turquoise blue to a bluish green. Darker blue is the best, greener less valuable. Check the clarity of the stone. Because aquamarine has a light pastel colour, it’s important to be free of flaws or inclusions. Examine the cut from different angles checking light reflects evenly off the surface of the gem. Aquamarine is usually heat treated and will become paler if left in the sun. Clean aquamarine in with warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush. As with all gemstones, protect from scratches and sharp blows.
