Tea & Coffee
We all love a cup of tea or coffee during the interval on a Wednesday evening, however this service runs the risk of grinding to a halt through lack of help! We desparately need volunteers to help Vicky with the preparation and clearing away of the refreshments. If you can help, please sign up on the sheet pinned to the notice board in the Tea/Coffee Area.

Beyond The wall
Last Tuesday, a large number of members attended a meeting of BTW when we were given a talk by Peter Lovelock of Color Confidence. Peter has given us a copy of his notes for the evening. So, if you can't remember what you were told, just follow this link and you will be able to download the notes.
You will also be able to find a download link on the BPS website in the Members' Area under the Beyond the Wall icon.

Bristol Salon
The 2020 Bristol salon is now open for entries. For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. For the first time since 1993, we are including two print sections!
Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4 digital sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel & Nature) and, new for 2020, 8 prints in 2 print sections (Open & Monochrome). These are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 18 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee.
To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link, all other details are on the BPS website on the BPS website. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter. When you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.
Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk
Full details can found on the BPS website

WEX/Calumet Workshops At Unit 13
The secrets of commercial food photography|Christmas edition with Esther Ling (Bristol) Panasonic
Friday 6 December, 11:00am – 3:00pm   £50
Join Esther Ling as she explores the secrets of food photography when working commercially, with this Christmas edition of shooting food for advertisement. The methodology behind setting up efficient shoots has been set up over many years to ensure photographers are able to capture mouth-watering images that delight the customer and exaggerate the real product to have maximum engagement.
From potato substituted for ice cream, to painted raw turkeys, images of food have been tampered with throughout the industry for years. Esther will show you the best way to work and help you with gaining portfolio shots for when you work on the real thing and how to ensure you are prepared for working commercially at Christmas. We will have a full set up for you

Wild Arena|Macro moth photography Canon
Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm £30
These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography.
During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close up.

We will cover a variety of topics including:
  • The choice & use of macro lenses
  • Keeping things in focus
  • The creative use of depth-of-field
  • Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to customers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.

Full details on all of these workshops can be found here
