Hello Firstname
Wednesday 8 May
There will be no meeting at the clubrooms next Wednesday, 8 May. Instead we will be meeting at the QEH Theatre in Jacob Wells Rd, Clifton for the annual showing of the Bristol International Salon of Photography. This is an event not to be missed when you will be able to see a selection from the nearly 3,000 images which were accepted in this year's Salon, including all of the award winners, all set to an appropriate musical background. Members are encouraged to bring along family or friends (or both); entry for members is free but a small charge of £4 is made for visitors or guests.
We will be showing roughly 900 images at the show, but if you feel you have time on your hands, you can view all of the accepted images on the BPS website by clicking here.

BPS AGM
The highlight in the BPS calendar happens again this July. I should remind you that this year's AGM takes place on 3 July. All motions for the AGM must be received by the Secretary by 29 May at the latest (see BPS Handbook, page 12). All motions must be in writing, signed by the proposer and seconder and either posted to The Secretary, Bristol Photographic Society, 12 West Mall, Bristol, BS8 4BH or given to Carol at any Wednesday meeting up to 29 May.

Annual Print Competition
The 2013 Annual Print Competition is nearly upon us; the closing date is just two weeks away on 15 May. This year's judge is Glyn Edmunds APSA EPSA EFIAP/s ARPS.
If you have any queries concerning the exhibition or its rules, please email David Southwell at david@vizion2000.net

Want To Know More About Camera Settings?
If you’ve been shooting with a camera in Auto mode all your life, messing around with camera setting can be intimidating. What if it’s set to shoot too fast, or the focus is off? There are a half dozen other ways the shot can go wrong.
Fear no more, because Canon Canada has a new virtual DSLR camera simulator that will help teach you most of the ropes about photography. Outside of Auto is a free Web app that will help you learn all about the holy trinity of digital camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). This works for all makes of camera!

Cardiff International Festival of Photography
There is amonth long festival of photography, Diffusion, being held in Cardiff throughout May. A guide to the Diffusion Festival is now available to download as a PDF from the front page of the Diffusion website. It has all the details you will need for planning your festival visit, including snippets about each exhibition and when & where to go, key events, workshops, activities, how to get there, places to stay, eat and drink while you are there, as well as a map to guide you around the city - all in one handy place! Download Here

Things to Photograph
With the May Bank Holiday now upon us, there should be plenty of events to photograph going on in your area. So after a rubbish winter/spring, now might be the time to dig your camera out from the bottom of the wardrobe, brush off the dust and get out there snapping. Here are a few of things that could be worth a visit:
  • North Somerset Show at Wraxall on Bank Holiday Monday. Full details here
  • Bristol 10K Run - Sunday 5 May. The race starts and finishes on Bristol's historic harbourside and includes passing under the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Full details here
  • Westonbirt Arboretum - Spring has finally arrived at the arboretum with many of the Magnolias and Rhododendrons now in full flower. For the more "careful" among you, there is half price entry on Wednesdays throughout May. Click here for the Westonbirt website.

Items For Sale
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, why not let me have details and I can circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Sue O'Connell on recently gaining her CPAGB award for Photographic Merit

If you want to blow your own trumpet or, dare I say such a thing, blow someone else's trumpet for them, then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include it in the next issue.
