John 2:1-2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

EPIPHANY AND A SMALL TOWN WEDDING

Epiphany is really an extension of the Christmas season. Already on the night of Jesus' lowly birth, God sent angels to some shepherds with the message that the one in Bethlehem's manger, wrapped in strips of cloth, was their "Savior who is Christ, the LORD."

This is also the message of Epiphany, that in Bethlehem's manger was more than met the eye! It was revealed some thirty years later at Cana in connection with a most common event. Not that weddings aren't special, but who could count the number of weddings that have taken place around the world in the last ten years? Or since God first instituted marriage in the Garden of Eden? Weddings and marriages are common, not just among Christians, but also among unbelievers. The people of Noah's day were celebrating weddings here and there right up to the time that the flood came and destroyed them all.

We might think that Jesus ought to give the first miraculous sign of His glory at some nation-wide event, like the Passover, or Pentecost. But no, He goes to a little village, to a wedding reception.

And what a comfort to us, who like to invite Jesus also to our weddings, and who ask Him to pronounce His word of blessing upon our marriages! What a comfort to us who like to ask His gracious presence at our meals, as lowly and as common as they may be. Jesus does not despise these requests, no matter how insignificant they may be to the rest of the world.
