Welcome to GYOP 2023.

You will by now have received your potato growing kit.
 
Your kit contains two different kinds of seed potatoes for planting and growing, plus one extra seed to show your class what is happening beneath the soil while your plants are growing.

Chitting your seed potatoes

 
 
 
 
 
Chitting is used to get your potatoes growing quicker  than if they were planted straight into cold soil.

It will start them growing earlier and could potentially result in a bigger yields.

To do this you will need an empty egg box or something similar, to hold your seed potatoes in.
 
Make sure you label each variety clearly, to save confusion at planting.

Grow Your Own Potatoes
 

Our aim is to educate children all about potatoes; where they come from, how they grow and how potatoes fit into a healthy balanced diet.

  
 
 
 
 
This year the GYOP project is sponsored by a number of companies, making it possible for us to make available 6,500 potato growing kits for primary schools nationwide.

Collectively, our aim is to excite children about growing food, as well as eating healthily and sustainably.  

Making a difference to the way children view their food at a young age is important, and will help to instil healthy eating habits that will stay with them as they grow.
