Projected Image Competition - Round 1
Next Wednesday, 7 September, is the closing date for Round 1 of the Projected Image Bi-Monthly Competition, the judge for this round will be Tony Byram ARPS DPAGB AFIAP AWPF.
Ken Clarke, the Competition Secretary, will be away from Sunday 4th to Thursday 8th inclusive, so entries made after Noon on Saturday will not be processed till his return. Such entries will not receive acknowledgement of entry till the 9th at the earliest, but he will check the entry time and date....  If any such entries do have problems he will take account of the delay! Full details of entry rules, file formats/names and how to submit your entries can be found on pages 22-28 of your 2016-2017 BPS Handbook. However, if you have any queries, I'm sure that Ken will be only too pleased to help (before the 4th) - his email address is competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk

All club members are invited to 'have a go'.

September also sees the launch of the new print Competition season. Prints for Round 1, will be judged by Roger Parry from Smethwick PS, will need to be submitted by Wednesday, 21 September. We hope that all members, at whatever level, will consider entering - for the joy of public recognition, constructive critique and the prospect of glory. With no expense spared, self-adhesive labels for your prints are now available from the table under the honours board at BPS.  Let's have a bumper entry!
As with the Projected Image competition, details and entry rules for the Print Competitions and how to submit your entries can be found on pages 22-28 of your 2016-2017 BPS Handbook. Important Notice: Insurance Inventory - Unit 13
We are in the throes of preparing an up to date inventory of all equipment at Unit 13 for insurance purposes and now only have the contents of the upstairs store left to list. The studio equipment that is in the store seems to have bred at an alarming rate since we moved from Clifton and we are no longer sure what belongs to BPS and what belongs to members. So that we can sort out the inventory properly we would appreciate it if you could let us know if you have any studio equipment in the store (and what it is) and additionally, when you will be able to remove it. This is because any equipment held at Unit 13 but not owned by BPS is not covered by our insurance.
Any equipment that is not already on the inventory and is not claimed by members by the end of September will be deemed to be the property of BPS and as such, any equipment found to be surplus to the requirements of the studio and/or the Society will be disposed of after that date.
Please email all responses to unit13@bristolphoto.org.uk

Free Studio Lights
In line with the article above, we have already sorted out some older equipment that is destined for the tip. Before we make that fateful trip, the equipment is on a table upstairs in the Other Room, if anyone wants any of it they are welcome to take it. It will be there for the next two weeks, after which it will be too late.

Studio Use
The studio now has some new lights which bring it up to near professional standard. The set up now comprises two Bowens GM500R main lights (including Pulsar Tx trigger) complete with soft boxes, 2 Bowens GM500 background lights complete with brolly reflectors and a single Interfit EX-150 for use as a hair light (this last light is kindly on loan from Derwood Pamphilon - thanks). Please see the following item for details on booking the studio.

Studio & Clubroom Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Bob Faris FRPS MPAGB AFIAP - Retrospective
The BPS walls have been awash with colour for the last couple of weeks with the retrospective exhibition of prints by long-standing member and former President Bob Faris FRPS MPAGB AFIAP. Bob got the chance to show off the exhibition to his daughter, Paula, and son in law, Steve, when they visited Bristol from their home city of Newcastle earlier this week. Here we can see Bob showing (in no uncertain manner) the finer points of one his pictures to Paula & Steve.

PAGB eNews
There are two PAGB eNews downloads this week, the first is a tribute to Sir George Pollock who died recently and the second is Issue 170 which includes news of the FIAP Nature Biennial and a Famous Dave featured photographer.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Several members of BPS have done well in the recent Welsh International Salon. Along with some of the usual culprits who gained multiple acceptances: Val Duncan - 21 (how many!) acceptances, including FIAP Blue Pin for most acceptances and Greg Duncan - 7 acceptances, including a Gold Medal, there were also acceptances for David Alderson and Mike Bews with 3 acceptances apiece. Below are a couple of the images by David and Mike:

Seize the Moment - David Alderson

Speed on the Bend - Mike Bews

Mike's picture is another example of the images a small group of us managed to get on a recent trip to Somerset Speedway at Highbridge. It was an evening when everything came together, the hospitality, the action and, above all, the lighting. Sadly, only a small number of club members were able to follow the advanced notice in the newsletter, which meant that a large number of members missed out on a cracking evening.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
