THE ‘EUROPEAN HERITAGE ALLIANCE 3.3’ LAUNCHED IN AMSTERDAM

The “European Heritage Alliance 3.3.” was recently launched by more than 25 European and International networks and organisations active in the wider field of cultural heritage on the occasion of the European Heritage Congress 2011 organised by Europa Nostra in Amsterdam. Europa Nostra will be acting as the facilitator of this newly created alliance.  Read more

 

EUROPA NOSTRA JOINS “WE ARE MORE!” CAMPAIGN

During the European Heritage Congress 2011 in Amsterdam, the Europa Nostra Council decided to join the “we are more!” campaign. This Europe-wide advocacy campaign, developed in partnership with European Cultural Foundation, calls for an increased support to culture in the next EU budget (for the period 2014-2020). VIEW THE PHOTOS OF THE EUROPEAN HERITAGE AWARDS CEREMONY 2011

The 27 winners of the 2011 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards were honoured on 10 June during a ceremony at Amsterdam's historic concert hall, the 'Concertgebouw'. The awards were presented by Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Plácido Domingo, the world-renowned tenor and president of Europa Nostra. Six of the 27 winners were announced to the public as 'Grand Prix' laureates in recognition of their outstanding heritage achievements. The ceremony was attended by an audience of some 1500 people including our guest of honour, H.R.H. Princess Margriet of The Netherlands. View the photos Read speeches

 

TWO EX-EQUO WINNERS FOR THE MEMBERS’ CHOICE AWARD

This year for the first time, Europa Nostra members could choose their favourite laureate among those 27 selected by the Juries and cast their vote via the website for the Members Choice Award. The ex-equo winners of the Europa Nostra Members’ Choice Award for 2011 are: The Church of Saint George in Albania and  Villa Empain in Brussels. Read more

 

PLACIDO DOMINGO AND ANDROULLA VASSILIOU VISITED THE ARTZUID EXHBITION 2011 IN AMSTERDAM

On the occasion of the European Heritage Awards Ceremony in Amsterdam, Plácido Domingo and Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner in charge of Culture, visited one of the three Dutch award winners: the ArtZuid project. Photographers and journalists were there to ask questions and picture the moment. Read more

 

 

EUROPEAN HERITAGE CONGRESS IN THE MEDIA

The European Heritage Congress that took place in Amsterdam on 8-11 June was well covered by the European media. Plácido Domingo’s visit to one of the Dutch winners, the ArtZuid project, together  with the European Commissioner, Androulla Vassiliou, was covered by Dutch national TV NOS as well as by local papers. He also gave an exclusive interview to one of the most influential daily newspapers in the Netherlands, the NRC Handelsblad. AMSTERDAM MAYOR WELCOMES EUROPA NOSTRA TO HIS WORLD HERITAGE CITY

Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan welcomed the Europa Nostra delegates at the opening reception for the European Heritage Congress, which took place on Wednesday 8 June evening in Amsterdam’s very oldest building, the Oude Kerk situated in the city’s medieval centre. He stated that he was very pleased that heritage experts, young and old, had traveled to his city from across Europe, also to celebrate the designation of Amsterdam’s ring of canals section of the city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the summer of 2010. FULL HOUSE FOR THE DAVID CHIPPERFIELD PUBLIC LECTURE

As closing highlight of the Heritage Excellence Fair on 9 June, Europa Nostra was proud to host a public lecture by Sir David Chipperfield in the Gashouder building of the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. David Chipperfield Architects was responsible for the superb ‘renaissance’ of the Neues Museum in Berlin, winner of a Grand Prix in the Conservation category of the 2010 edition of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. The Neues Museum and David Chipperfield Architects also won the 2011 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award. Read more

 

BOOK PRESENTATION OF RETOUR BRUSSELS-ERFGOED EN EUROPA

During the reception kindly hosted by Stadsherstel Amsterdam n.v. at its headquarters, the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam, Astrid Weij, in charge of International Affairs at Erfgoed Nederland, presented the first copy of the Dutch language book “Retour Brussel – Heritage and Europe” to Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic, EN Secretary General and Ann Branch, Head of Unit a the DG Culture and Education of the European Commission. The reception was held on 9 June after the Heritage Excellence Fair at the Westergasfabriek. Read more

In conjunction with the Amsterdam Congress, we have produced and distributed all over Europe a series of new publications, namely the “Dutch Special” of our “Heritage in Motion” European Cultural Heritage Review, the Award Laureates 2011 Magazine with its Grand Prix insert and our 2010 Annual Report. Volunteers for heritage - worth their weight in gold!

Europa Nostra members adopted the “Amsterdam Declaration on Volunteers as added-value for Europe’s cultural and natural heritage” during their 2011 General Assembly (11 June, Hermitage Amsterdam). This Declaration reflects the conclusions of the Europa Nostra Forum “Volunteers: added value for Europe’s heritage” held the day before at Felix Meritis, organised in cooperation with Bond Heemschut and Erfgoed Nederland. CALL FOR PAPERS: “heritage for society”

The Cultural Policy and Management Research Centre at the Istanbul Bilgi University calls for the submission of academic articles and book reviews for the Centre’s Yearbook 2011 which will contain a special dossier on “Heritage for Society”. This call concerns articles and reviews that discuss and investigate the theory and practice of cultural heritage management and policies in Turkey and/or Europe and within regional context, based on the principles of the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on “Value of Cultural Heritage for Society” (Faro, 2005). HERITAGE IN DANGER

 

Europa Nostra Actions Makes a Difference at Mont St Michel

Europa Nostra welcomes the recent (23 June) decision of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee to officially request the suspension of all wind farm projects which could have a visual impact on the cultural landscape surrounding Mount Saint-Michel. This call specifically requests the reversal of the approval granted by the Municipality of Argouges (La Manche) to build wind turbines of such a height as to be within sight from the top of the Mont. UNESCO supports the position that at no point, either from the top of Mont St. Michel or from any where in the surrounding country side or from in the surrounding bay, should there be a possibility of co-visibility between the Mont and a wind turbine. SECOND HOME DEVELOPMENT WILL DESTROY GREECE’S ENVIRONMENT AND ECOMONY

Our Greek member organisation Elliniki Etairia - The Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and the Cultural Heritage is campaigning against irresponsible policies promoting second home development on the coastline of Greece and is calling for help to collect signatures via an online form. Read more

 

WE, L’AQUILA: CITIZENS EMPOWERED BY DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

Google, in partnership with the city of L'Aquila and the National Association of Emigrated Families (A.N.F.E.) has launched a new website using digital technologies to contribute to the pending reconstruction of the devastated Italian city of L'Aquila following the earthquake in April 2009. People can upload old images of the city with their life stories as well as images after the earthquake. They can also help modelling the city in 3D to inspire its future physical reconstruction. Read more

PARTNERSHIPS

 

WIKI LOVES MONUMENTS LAUNCHES A PARTNERSHIP WITH EUROPA NOSTRA

Wiki Loves Monuments is a public photo contest around European monuments, initiated by the Wikimedia chapter in the Netherlands. In September 2011 it will be extended to several European countries. The contest is organised in a federative way, so the procedures on a national level might differ from country to country. The basic concept is that people are invited to upload images of monumental objects under a free license for usage on Wikipedia. They want to try to get complete lists of these monuments on Wikipedia, including photos, giving a great and unique overview of the cultural heritage in Europe. Read more

The world-wide International National Trust Organisation (INTO), with which Europa Nostra has been developing a mutually beneficial partnership, will organise its bi-annual conference in Victoria, Canada, from 12-16 October 2011. The theme of the conference is: “Connecting People, Places and Stories; New strategies for conservation in a changing world”. The programme can be consulted and registration can be made online. Each year Europa Nostra and the European Union reward the best of Europe’s cultural heritage achievements. The 2012 call for entries for the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards is available to download from the Europa Nostra website. The deadline to send in your application form is 1 October 2011. COMMISSIONER VASSILIOU ATTENDED THE AWARDS CEREMONY IN ATHENS

A memorable ceremony took place on 23 June in Athens to celebrate the Greek winners of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards 2010 and 2011: the National Observatory in Athens (2010), the Ancient Tower and Adjacent Buildings at Horio-Aghia Triada in Amorgos (2010) and the archaeological site of Ancient Messene (2011). The event was organised in the inspiring setting of the ancient hill of the Nymphs by the National Observatory of Athens with the kind support of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation. Read more

NET HERITAGE PORTAL LAUNCH:  23 SEPTEMBER ROME

Heritage Portal is a freely accessible online resource for anyone interested in European cultural heritage science, including the academic community, students, teachers, curators, conservationists, funders and policy makers. The Portal consists of news, a database of reports and datasets, and a social networking area. It is a virtual platform for users to share their knowledge and work, and to collaborate. A breakfast launch and press briefing is scheduled on 23 September in Rome. Read more

 

‘HERITAGE, DRIVER OF DEVELOPMENT’ 17th ICOMOS GENERAL ASSEMBLY:  27 NOVEMBER

The most important triennial gathering of ICOMOS will take place from 27 November to 2 December 2011 for the first time in Paris at UNESCO headquarters. Read more
