Hello Firstname

Wednesday 18 October
Next Wednesday will see the first round of the Print Competition, which is being judged by our own Graham Reeves EFIAP. Graham is a successful exhibition entrant and experienced national and international judge; he also runs the Print Group evenings (with Pete McCloskey) for members aspiring to photographic distinctions. So, we can expect some well-considered and helpful comments and with 95 prints to judge we should be in for a full and entertaining evening.

Print Group
Next Monday, 16 October, is the next meeting of the Print Group. This group is open to members who are producing prints and are either already on the road towards photographic distinctions or who are thinking about joining that road, or just want to improve their printing. This is an informal group led by Pete McCloskey and Graham Reeves who will be able to offer advice and assistance to help you reach those targets.
IMPORTANT: Would those attending, please note that the meeting is being held upstairs in "The Other Room" as the Photography Course will be using the studio area. Please use the door to the left of the ladies toilet.

Studio Group
The next Studio Group meeting will be for beginners on Monday 30 October starting at 7pm and will be a 2-hour session. It will be covering portraits with the model Poppy, the cost will be £15 payable on the night.
To sign up please follow this link to a Doodle Poll, the event is limited to 6 photographers, first come first served. If Nick gets more than 6 participants he will arrange an additional session so please sign up even if the event appears to be full.
By popular demand, Nick will be organising two types of session from now on: Beginners will be for people who do not feel they are confident using the studio equipment in terms of setting the lights, directing the model etc. and there will be six participants at each session. Advanced sessions will be spread over a day with no more than two photographers at a time, who will be able to arrange their own lighting set up and bring their own props etc.
Any questions please contact Nick.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

RPS Membership Card Competition
You may recall that in issue 256 I asked you to vote in a competition that the RPS were running, to pick an image that would appear on the back of all their membership cards for the coming year. Two of the images shortlisted were by BPS members and the image of a Nocturnal Red-eyed Frog - Costa Rica by John Hudson ARPS was the one finally chosen as the winner, congratulations John.

PAGB Interclub Print Competition
Following recent pleas in the newsletter and at meetings, BPS members provided a very large number of prints from which our entry for this year’s PAGB Inter-Club Print Championship could be selected. Earlier this week a small band of villains (John Chamberlin, Pete McCloskey and Barry Mead, aided and abetted by Danny Heaton and yours truly) went through the herculean task of picking 12 prints to form our entry for the first round of the competition plus a back-up bank of prints for possible use in the later rounds. These prints were on the clubroom wall during this week's club meeting for all to see, but in case you missed them, here are the 12 prints picked for Round 1:

Defeated - Keith Wood
Frostbite - Barry Mead
Medallion Man - Peter Brisley
A Head Turner - Mike Bigger
Chasing The Storm - Mike Hall
Valentine's Day- Barry Mead
Mad Hatter- Barry Mead
Forbidden Fruit- Barry Mead
Sandhill Crane In Flight - John Chamberlin
Waxwing With Rowan - Mary Pears
One The Bend - Pete Howell
Through The Doorway - John Chamberlin

A big thank you to all who provided prints, let's hope that we are successful at the competition on 29 October.

Competitions To Enter
The PAGB Masters of Print Competition is held each October, followed by a public Exhibition. Individual Photographers who are members of affiliated Clubs may enter directly, without any pre-qualification. Photographers may enter prints in any combination of the Monochrome, Colour and Nature Categories and awards are made to individual prints. Prints are then selected for the Exhibition. There is a large number of big prizes to be won, so if you do prints, now is your chance for glory! For full entry details and a list of the magnificent prizes on offer, please follow this link.
If you would like to enter, but are concerned about the logistics or cost of sending your prints, Mike Hall and John Chamberlin are going to the PAGB Interclub Print Competition at Blackburn on 29 October and they have said that they are happy to take your entry with them.

International Landscape Photographer of the Year - entries are invited for this competition, the closing date is 19 November. Full entry details can be found here.

Dates For Your Diary
This Friday The Stargazers (AKA Bristol Astronomical Society), who meet at Unit13 every Friday at 7.15, have an evening this week that may appeal to BPS members. It is by a gentleman called Stephen Banks, also known as the DorsetScouser and he will be presenting his talk called Stargazing in Dorset’s Dark Skies. Stephen is well known for his images of the night skies over Dorset, many examples of which can be seen by visiting his website. Having looked at his website, his images seem to be as much to do with Dorset by night as they are with the night sky - this a meeting that could well be worth a visit. Visit the Stargazers' website for more details.
Until 15 Oct
Just a few days left

John Hudson tells me that they are very amenable to photographers, with the one proviso that there is no flash used. He also says that you should try to get seats opposite the artistes entrance (either side of the public entrance), try to get half way up the raked seating for the best view.
Thanks to John Hudson & Keith Wood

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Items For Sale
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
