Next Wednesday we welcome Slawek Staszczuk from Sussex who will be presenting his talk Landscape Photography Is Simple. Slawek says of his talk:
My talk will centre on the creative side of landscape photography, rather than on the technical aspects. Specifically, on lighting, composition and timing. It will be illustrated with a variety of examples, from both the UK and European destinations.
|
|
The accompanying images will have been taken at different times of day, and in different atmospheric conditions. They will span subjects from the rolling English countryside, through seascapes and mountain scenes, to cityscapes and architecture, including Blue Hour. The presentation will be strewn with practical advice regarding planning, choice of vantage point and perspective, composition and more. Audience participation is strongly encouraged.
|
To see more of Slawek's images and to read more about him, why not visit his website, click here.

All members are welcome to the Digital Group meeting on Monday 13 January, especially if you bring along some images to present to the members. You may bring prints or images on a memory stick in jpg format, sRGB colour space, any size, in a folder of your name. It is also a chance to show off your work. There is always an opportunity to ask for comments on your work if you wish or advice on technical digital matters.
In the last week’s newsletter I had mentioned the possibility of hands on workshops on creative imaging. Please have another look at it and let me have any feedback on it that you might have - soon.

Places are available for the next studio group, this will be a morning session on Friday 17 January starting at 10.00am with a Circus performer. This will be a great session for both beginners and those with studio experience, to sign up please go to this link.

A date for your diary: BTW will be hosting a "Practical Exercise in Mounting" (presumably not the carnal variety!) on Tuesday 28 January at 7.30pm. This will be a hands-on evening when all the mysteries surrounding print mounting will be explained and demonstrated. Bring along a small print (max 7" x 5") to play with.
A visit to Steve Russell Studios has been arranged for the evening of 27 Feb 2020 - time to be advised. There is a limit to numbers so a "pecking order" will be set up nearer the time.
Further details of both events closer the date.

Only a few days left for BPS members to get their FREE entry into the 2020 Bristol Salon. For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. For the first time since 1993, we are including two print sections!
Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4 digital sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel & Nature) and, new for 2020, 8 prints in 2 print sections (Open & Monochrome). These are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 18 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee.
To help you with your entry there is a short tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link, all other details are on the BPS website. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter. When you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.
Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Wildlife Photographer of the Year |
Wildlife Photographer of the Year – the world-renowned exhibition from the Natural History Museum – is back at M-Shed until 4 May with 100 new images. Now in its 55th year, Wildlife Photographer of the Year presents the most arresting and spectacular photography of our natural world. Encounter the beauty and fragility of wildlife, see fascinating animal behaviour and get to know extraordinary species. You’ll discover the surprising – and often challenging – stories behind the images during a time of environmental crisis.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind showcasing the world’s most astonishing sights for more than 50 years. Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives 48,000 entries from 100 countries.
It's worth reading the following from John Hudson:
I, like many, have been to this exhibition every year for I know not how long. I have been jaded to the point of thinking of it as a duty rather than a pleasure - especially in recent years when the "arty"-ness of the print was given more credit than its technical merit or content.
This year is different, back to good standards and some great images. I was pleasantly surprised and urge people to go along.

The 2020 Members Exhibition is now open for entry and will remain so until 7 March 2020
Any member of a WCPF affiliated club may enter. There are 3 print sections (Mono, Colour and Nature) and 4 projected image sections (Open, Creative, Nature and Photo Travel).
Anyone who has entered a previous exhibition will have received an ‘invitation to enter email’ containing a link to the entry system. The link is also available on the WCPF website.
Awards
In each class a PAGB Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal, 6 Selector PAGB ribbons and a number of Highly Commended Certificates will be awarded.
A ‘Best Wildlife’ trophy will be awarded in the digital and print Nature classes.
The ‘Margaret Aven’ trophy to the entrant with the most acceptances across all 7 classes The ‘Millennium Trophy’ for the best image in the exhibition.
Terms and Conditions
The class definitions can be seen on the entry website. They are those adopted by the PAGB.
Please note the Nature Definition has changed as has the manner in which Nature images will be viewed if entered into the Open or Colour classes. If entering the Photo Travel class, please review the information on that class and read the additional PSA conditions on the WCPF website (General Info Page). The PSA guidelines will be taken into consideration during the selection process particularly when selecting the awards. Please read the detailed conditions carefully before submitting your entry.
Favourite Print and Sale Of Prints
One of the visitors to the exhibition who votes for their favourite print will win a mounted copy of that print. The winner will be drawn from all votes recorded and their choice may not be the print that receives the most votes overall. We hope that entrants will participate in this initiative, but you can opt out when finalising your entry.
Sale Of Prints: Entrants may offer their accepted prints for sale to visitors. There is a standard price of £35 per print plus postage. Entrants will be informed of any purchase requests once the exhibition has closed., and it will then be their responsibility to deliver the print to the purchaser. Entrants can opt out when they finalise their entry.
The selectors this year are:
- Peter Gennard MFIAP EFIAP/p
- Jane Lines MPAGB BPE5

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have anything to sell, or you're looking for something to buy, just let me know and I'll include it here. Please bear in mind, we only advertise items for BPS members.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter. If they are wrong, please visit the Members' Area of the BPS website where you can register any changes using the on-line form provided; this form can also be used for change of address, email etc.
