Next Wednesday we welcome to BPS, Stephen Spraggon who will be presenting his talk called Four Seasons in One Day.
Stephen is a Somerset-based landscape photographer. He specialises in British landscapes, with an emphasis on the west country. Preferring to meticulously plan pictures in advance rather than rely on luck alone, Stephen takes a methodical approach to his work, often returning to a spot several times to capture the best light and conditions.

The changing seasons affect light, choice of location, subject matter
and... how much sleep can or can't be had! During this talk Stephen will
show images taken throughout the year and discuss how to get the most
from each season. Image ideas, technical considerations, creative
choices and some inevitable mistakes will be explained through a series
of images from the west country and further afield. |

7.30pm next Monday, 13 November, sees the monthly meeting of the DI Group. As usual all members are welcome to this informal gathering of like-minded souls. Please come along, if you can bring images to share, that will be all the better. Images can be either prints or projected images (jpeg only please, on USB memory sticks) - bring them along whether it's just to show off what you've been doing or because you have a problem or query that you would like the assembled masses to help you solve. |
Print Competition - Round 2
|
The closing date for Print Competition Round 2 is just two weeks away, 22 November. The prescribed category for your third print this time is Work, although this is a word that is alien to some of you, I'm sure that you can add your own spin to the subject. Full details of entry rules on pages 24 onwards in your Members' handbook, but if you have any queries, I'm sure that the Competition Secretary, David Alderson, will be able to answer them for you, either at next Wednesday's meeting or email - printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk
The judge for this round is Eddy Lane ARPS DPAGB EFIAP from Calne |
Parking - Important Information
|
There has been a slight revision to the areas we can park in on a Wednesday evening. The owners of Unit 5 (in the area immediately on your left as you enter the estate) have had occasion to be working on a Wednesday evenings recently, would members please, therefore, make sure that the area in front of this unit is kept clear in future.
I did mention a few issues ago that new "Private Parking" bays had been marked out on the roadway within the estate - these are to deter commuters using the estate to park in whilst they disappear into work on the train and as such, only applies during the day, as co-owners of the estate we are allowed to park in these areas. |
Don't forget, the Beyond the Wall Group meet this Sunday, 12 November. The location is The Promenade in Clifton. Please meet at the bottom of the road where it meets Bridge Valley Road on Sunday, 12 November at 8.00am. There are no parking restrictions on Sundays and hopefully there will be only a couple of joggers and the occasional dog walker up at that time.

PSA Interclub Travel Competition |
BPS enter the DPIC and the GB Cup competitions with pictures selected from the HCs and awards from our internal competitions, however we also enter an inter-club competition organised by our member Greg Duncan on behalf of the PSA, (Photographic Society of America). The problem is that we do not have enough Travel pictures getting awards in our competitions for us to make up an entry. Travel pictures should depict a way of life or a time and place. If members have any good suitable pictures, could they let our External Competitions Secretary, Pete McCloskey, have copies for our image bank. Please e-mail to pmccloskey11@btinternet.com in the format of our competitions. If you have any questions regarding this, I'm sure that Pete will be only too pleased to answer them. |
PAGB Interclub Print Competition |
The PAGB Interclub Print Competition took place on 29 October at Blackburn. BPS were one of the two clubs to represent WCPF, the other was Fotoclub Nonpareil who for a new club did extremely well and were place 2nd overall. Sadly, we didn't fare so well and didn't manage to come in the top 8 and therefore weren't eligible to compete for the overall trophy. We came a disappointing 26th out of 36 in the first round, with the overall winner of the final being Cambridge. In the Plate Competition (for those clubs that failed to reach the top 8) we came a much more satisfying 3rd just 2 points behind the eventual Plate winners, Wigan 10. Mike Hall was the BPS star, with a 14 in the first round and a 15 (same image) in the Plate. Barry Mead and Graham Pears scored a 13 each in the first round with all other prints getting 11 or 12, We had no bad scores, but the marking was high with an average of 13 required to make the final. In the Plate all our 5 prints scored well. Sue and Peter Brisley each had a 13, Barry Mead and John Chamberlin had a 14. The final results were: Overall Champions 1st - Cambridge Camera Club (EAF) 2nd - Fotoclub Non Pareil (WCPF) 3rd - Dundee Photographic Society (NIPF)
Plate Competition 1st - Wigan 10 FC (L&CPU) 2nd - Keswick Photographic Society (NCPF) 3rd - Bristol Photographic Society (WCPF) |

Friday 17 November, Kingswood PS welcome Christine Widdall MPAGB, EFIAP, FBPE who will be giving an illustrated talk entitled Portfolio. Christine is a photographer based in the North West of England and many of her photographs are made around the lovely area of Saddleworth, especially its hills and waterways.
Christine’s aim is to try to capture places, people and moments in time and make them as beautiful and interesting as possible. Some are ‘competition’ pictures, others just an expression of her enjoyment of a day, an area or a subject.
Initially a hobby, photography has now become a major part of her life, as an exhibitor and judge and in 2011 she was accepted as one of 20 lecturers in the UK who are supported by PermaJet. For further information about Christine, visit her website

3 & 4 Feb

The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms in February to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions, and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date Criteria for the different associations John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work with you which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 3 & 4 February (two courses). Full details can be found by following this link.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP
|
If you reckon some of our members take their photography too seriously, you haven't lived. No-one, so far as I know, has penned a song to say how wonderful BPS is, just follow this link to to hear how wonderful Andreas Andreou from Cyprus reckons FIAP is - Eurovision ain't heard nothing yet!

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

In this section works two weeks ago Jason Eastham advertised his Canon camera for sale and within 24 hours of it appearing in print he had received 6 enquiries, and it sold - so if you have something to sell THIS IS THE PLACE TO DO IT!
|
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.
|
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it
would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that
she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue
to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
