See phone numbers, and WEB FORMS to EMAIL COMPLAINTS to Enzi, Durbin, Harkin, and Hatch immediately. Enzi chairs the committee that is looking at this, and if he gets hit with enough complaints, it might give him pause and stop him from fast tracking AER legislation in November. (If it gets fast tracked, we might only have 2 weeks to respond, and with CRN and NNFA against consumers on this that would not be an easy battle.)

WHAT TO SAY:

"I oppose legislation that would create an Adverse Event Reporting System for dietary supplements for the simple reason that the FDA would abuse it by using it as part of a WITCH HUNT to attack safe dietary supplements any time a person has an adverse reaction to a pharmaceutical drug and just happens to have taken a dietary supplement at the same time.

You don't have an Adverse Event Reporting System for Food in Common Form, even though hard evidence from the American Association of Poison Control Centers clearly indicates that every year far more people die from food in common form than from dietary supplements. Examples include instances of people allergic to peanuts, shellfish and shrimp going into anaphalactic SHOCK due to severe food allergies.

Creating an AER Reporting system for safe dietary supplements would thus create an outrageous double standard. This is a clear case of Senator Durbin of Illinois, where AMA HQ is located, attempting to engage in a witch hunt. As a vitamin consumer I am greatly ANGERED that Senators Hatch and Harkin would support such legislation. It would force many dietary supplement companies out of business because they wouldn't be able to afford the insurance they'd have to take out to continue selling many products."

It was started by my good buddy Gerry Kessler of Nature's Plus, a vitamin company that deserves all of our respect and support because it is not afraid to stand up for consumers and to try to stop the pharma elements that are controlling CRN and NNFA.
