I have re-sent the newsletter, as several items were missed out in the edition sent out this morning. What happened was that YMLP, who send out the newsletters for us, actually sent out an earlier draft instead of the finalised version. This version contains the missing items on the DI Group, Derwood Pamphilon's new website and another photographic programme you might like to watch.

Next Wednesday we have the final round of the Projected Image Competition, this will be the evening when, as well as seeing who has won this round, we find out who the overall winner of this year's contest is. The judge for the evening is Michael Krier ARPS MA (Photography). Michael is a well recognised judge and speaker, however I have trawled the web and have failed to find a website for him, so you'll have to wait for next Wednesday to see the sort of things that he likes.

Monday 13 March is the date for next meeting of the DI Group. Over the last few months the DI meetings have been running with fully packed evenings of presentations from various members, many new to DI group. Next Monday we will start off the evening with a few fabulous images from his Iceland trip which are a bit different from what we have seen from others. Ashwin has been unable to show them because time had run out at the last three meetings. Besides the usual presentations, we've recently had some very interesting presentations on light painting experiments, an insight into how John Hudson captures his stunning images of colourful humming birds, issues with lens focussing and many other topics which members do not have time to discuss with others at the normal Wednesday evenings.
Next Monday we will also have a fifteen-minute slot for some technical hints and tips on Photoshop – locking parts of layers and also create shadows which are essential if you are thinking of making creative images.
All members are welcome to come along, especially with their images to show off what you have been doing or get comments and/or advice from fellow members. Images can be either prints or projected (jpeg of any size on a USB memory stick in a folder of your name please). We look forward to seeing you and your images on Monday. As usual plenty of chocolate biscuits and coffee are offered free at DI meetings.

Now We Know How he Gets So Many Acceptances ......

..... he takes twice as many pictures as anybody else! Greg Duncan was snapped in Venice last week (by Barry Mead) quite unashamedly exposing a nice pair of Canons!
For those of you who aren't too sure what Greg's up to, he's heavily into stereo photography these days, having won numerous awards in international stereo exhibitions.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

I know that some members (well, at least one that I can think of!) have doubts about the "honesty" of some of the manipulated images that we see these days, especially with all the manipulation that has obviously gone on in many creative images. You might be interested to see that, over the years, things haven't changed. What follows is an extract from a letter written by a member (anonymously) in 1985 to BPS Council, voicing his disquiet about the amount of fiddling and diddling that went on in the production of (darkroom) images:
…..I have to confess an inner abhorrence of the entire concept of tarting up a print through the now well established means of burning in, spotting, negative reduction – you name it. While tempting – albeit costly and complicated – (effective granted) – I deem, yes I really do, these approaches to the production of a perfect statement being totally dishonest...

Derwood Pamhilon has asked me to let you know that he has a new website, this can be found at www.derwoodphotography.com. Here you will find plenty of Derwood's images ranging from his well known figure & ballet work, through to urbex and travel and much more - in fact, something to suit most tastes.

Mike Bigger has emailed me to let me know of a forthcoming programme on BBC4 at 9pm, next Monday's. The programme is called Britain in Focus: A Photographic History: although the first episode was last Monday, there are still two more episodes to go. I'm told by those who watched episode 1 that it is well worth watching.
In the series, Eamonn McCabe celebrates Britain's greatest photographers, sees how science allowed their art to develop, and explores how they have captured our changing lives and country. Eamonn explores the science behind early photography, and shows how innovative photographic techniques made possible the careers of pioneers like Roger Fenton and Julia Margaret Cameron. He sees how great figures of the age such as Queen Victoria and Isambard Kingdom Brunel were captured on camera, and revisits the Victorians' sense of wonder about the 'natural magic' of photography and the role it played in their lives.
Derwood Pamphilon has mentioned a series available on netflix - this is another photographic series worth watching: Tales by Light - This follows renowned photographers as they explore far-flung locales, capturing extraordinary images that present nature and culture in a new light. www.netflix.com/gb/title/80133187

Frome Camera Fair. Frome Wessex Camera Club holds Camera Fairs twice a year, in April and October. The venue is in the centre of Frome at the Cheese and Grain, Market Yard, BA11 1BE. The fairs provides a great opportunity for photography enthusiasts to buy, sell and exchange cameras and other equipment and are always well attended by both traders and buyers. Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
