CALL ON LABOR NOT TO THROW TEACHERS UNDER THE SCHOOLS BUS

Advocates have welcomed Labor's announcement of legislation to protect LGBTI students from discrimination at religious schools but have called on it to go further and protect teachers and other school workers as well.

Just.equal spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said,

"Labor's push to protect LGBTI kids from discrimination is very welcome, but it must also protect LGBTI teachers and other school workers."

"Labor is the party of worker rights so it should stand up for workers in religious schools and not throw them under the school bus."

Opposition leader in the Senate, Penny Wong, says Labor will introduce legislation in a move expected to force Government action on the issue.

Earlier this week just.equal released an LGBTI community survey showing over 90% support for protecting LGBTI teachers and other school workers from discrimination (survey report attached).

A Senate report was also released recommending consideration be given to protecting teachers and other school workers from discrimination in line with Tasmania where such discrimination has been prohibited for twenty years.
