HUNTSVILLE – Scott Harris Layton, 64, passed away on December 27, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 13, 1951 in Ogden, Utah the son of Jesse and Shirley Layton. He married Connie Lou DeYoung on July 19, 1973 in the Ogden Utah LDS Temple.
Scott lived his entire life in beautiful Huntsville, which he considered his spot of heaven. He lived close to his parents and several siblings and loved having his extended family nearby. He attended elementary and junior high school in Huntsville and graduated from Weber High School in 1969. Scott served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Germany South Mission.
He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Botany from Weber State University in 1977 and began his life career with the US Forest Service as a Forest Ranger for the Ogden Ranger District for 36 years. During his career he had the opportunity to oversee public lands at Pineview Reservoir, Snowbasin Ski Resort, and other loved Ogden Valley locations. He was instrumental in the preparations and events at Snowbasin for the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic games. It was his dream job. As much as he enjoyed his career he found even more satisfaction in his role as husband, father to his four boys, and “Opa” to his grandchildren.
A boy at heart, he was always the instigator of games, competitions and play. He designed his yard to be his children and grandchildren’s playground where many memories were made in the sand volleyball court, basketball court, fort and “big” swing. His grandchildren love to go to “Opa’s house”. Scott enjoyed the outdoors, especially skiing and many memorable backpacking trips. He was a do-it- yourselfer and loved fixing and building things. He had a passion for yard work and gardening and found much joy in working side by side with his loving wife Connie. They are project people and always want to help others, especially their children, whether it’s with yard work, building things, painting, remodeling, moving, etc. etc. etc. They recently served an LDS Mission to San Jose, CA where they worked with young single adults in the area. They touched many lives and had a marvelous experience that helped strengthen their marriage and their testimony of eternal families. Scott also served faithfully in many other church callings and found enjoyment in reading about LDS Church History and studying gospel topics.
Scott is survived by his wife, Connie; four boys, Bryan (Susie Dickson), Billings, MT; Jared (Teresa Brown), Highlands Ranch, CO; Aaron (Stefani Harper), Fort Collins, CO; and Capt. Cory, U.S. Army (Jenna Thinnes), Landstuhl, Germany; 15 grandchildren; his mother, Shirley, Huntsville; four siblings, Kathy (Ron) Johansen serving an LDS Mission in Manchester England; Val (Tooney), Lander, WY: Rod (Teresa), Huntsville; and Brad (Cathie), Huntsville; and other special family members and friends. Scott was preceded in death by his father Jesse.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Huntsville 1st Ward Chapel, 277 South 7400 East. Friends may visit with family on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Huntsville Cemetery.
