 SILVER PYRE: AeXE
Sedgemoor Records
14th January 2013

Silver Pyre (aka Gary Fawle) has been gestating for a few years following two well received EPs "i)" and "ii)" released in the late 2000s. During the ensuing radio silence he has crafted and re-crafted his sparse, enthralling debut album, AeXE (pronounced "ax").

The mysticism and myth-making of British history has been explored by artists in many ways over the years and continues to provide inspiration. Growing up in Somerset surrounded by neolithic heritage, land layers, ancient architecture and concealed industrial pasts Gary Fawle is no stranger to the sensations that these inspire.

The influences are vast - visual, structural, musical.  Drawing upon folk music in both the literal and metaphorical sense, there is a strong forward-thinking element to the music - Fawle's formative musical influences are apparent throughout the record; early Autechre releases, Black Dog, Aphex Twin; Music that was created for the post-rave/freeparty scene - a form of folk music in its own right.  Clearly though, this cannot be described as an Electronic record - you can hear the romanticism of Robert Wyatt, the benign and sublime of the Fall, intelligent 80s pop music like Talk Talk.

 SPECK MOUNTAIN: Badwater
Carrot Top Records
21st January 2013

While many efforts have been made to describe the music of Speck Mountain, one must jump in headfirst on their own to fully absorb the band’s textured and melodic sound. Deep within their sonic landscape is something innately recognizable––maybe it calls to mind a dozy record player hazing over ’60s soul, a dream, a scrap of a memory cloaked in that fuzzy atmosphere. By their own definition, “ambient soul” seems the most apt. It is a sound that surrounds us, warm and round––a sound that seems like it was always there. This is certainly the case on their forthcoming album Badwater, set for a 21st January 2013 release on Carrot Top Records.

Self-described “musical soul mates,” Marie-Claire Balabanian and Karl Briedrick appear to have lived out parallel lives in the suburban sprawls of Los Angeles and Detroit respectively before finding each other in New York City in the early-2000s. Now based in Chicago, the duo share song writing duties in the formative stages––Balabanian doles out her soulful vocals and Briedrick crafts rich sonic textures in bass and guitar in the final cuts.

 LEWIS CONNECTION: s/t
Numero
28th January 2013

With insurance money from a recently overturned Buick Century, brothers Andre and Pierre Lewis went on a recording tear through the Twin Cities in 1978, cutting a half-dozen songs in as many studios. Combining the astro-sexuality of Parliament with the sophisticated flammability of Earth, Wind & Fire, the Lewis Connection's misspelled debut captures the Minneapolis Sound's founding fathers at the paradigm-shifting convergence of funk, jazz, and pop for which the State of Minnesota (aka the Land of 10,000 Lakes) is famed.

Notorious child prodigies and party animals, the Lewis Connection's self-titled debut was smoked and snorted by frenzied audiences, with few copies rising to the surface in the intervening decades. Over thirty years later, the seedy masterpieces of Pierre and Andre Lewis remain a freaky hallmark in the canon of Midwestern funk.

THE ALIEN BALLROOM - Zero Pac A.D
Agitated
4th February 2013

Say hello to The Alien Ballroom, the combination previously known as Koolaid (Global Tyranny)

"Huh?" you may think, "What has happened to Koolaid???"

Let's be perfectly clear about this: there is a current market glut of "koolaids". The group, therefore, have sensibly altered their nomenclature and are henceforth known as The Alien Ballroom. You may recall Agitated Records "I'm So Convoluted" compilation - or you may not. Rest assured friends, there is guaranteed conceptual continuity here.

On their new Agitated Records long player Zero PAC A.D. the mystrionic Alien Ballroom plant their seeds and pitch their balls on the lush interzone betwixt the vintage and the cutting-edge to create a seven song album that fuses Atomic Age pop foppery with Neolithic year-zero sanguinity.

Aficionados of their previous releases will find much to enjoy in this new recording - or perhaps they won't. Frankly, it vexes the band not.

Of course, we really should have made some mention that this album is "song based" and not just relentless "space-rock-riff-battery" - is it as weird and leftfield as the Koolaid album? Probably not ...or maybe it is. Very different but very similar perhaps – we will leave it up to you.

FRANKA DE MILLE – Bridge The Roads
Chi Wara Music
11th February 2013

The first, and only, independent artist to be selected for the British Phonographic Industry’s ‘Why Music Matters’ campaign (alongside Nina Simone, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Louie Armstrong, John Martyn, Nick Cave….), Franka De Mille has already received critical acclaim for her emotionally raw and elegant blend of Americana, Chamber music and neo-folk. Her focus on strong melodies underlines the powerful, emotional charge of her unique voice and personal lyrics.

With her deliberate use of violin, cello, accordion, mandolin and flute as ‘second voices’, adding a rich depth, and her creative clarity and expression having been compared to the likes of Patti Smith, Tori Amos, Kate Bush and PJ Harvey, De Mille remains both musically and vocally uncompromising.

 P**SED JEANS: Honeys
Sub Pop
11th February 2013

P**sed Jeans will release their stellar fourth album, Honeys through Sub Pop Records on 11th February 2013. The album, which features the single “Bathroom Laughter,” along with stand-outs “Health Plan,” “Loubs,” “Vain in Costume,” and “Teenage Adult,” was recorded by Grammy-nominated producer Alex Newport at Milkboy Studios in Philadelphia.

The songs on Honeys are direct without being obtuse, evocative without being vague, and personal without being indulgent. They also rock like nobody's business. Do yourself a favour and forget all the claptrap you've heard about other bands delivering the goods. If you want bloodthirsty, you’ve got it… Sean McGuiness makes other rock drummers look like one of those dimwit longhairs with an involuntary smile playing a bongo by himself on the lawn behind a store that sells rain sticks. With a bass that bass that sounds like a train filled with stolen shopping carts crashing into an orchestra pit, Randy Huth doesn't waste a note. Bradley Fry doesn't look like a guitar hero; he looks a nice guy who would volunteer to help you reformat the drive on your laptop. But if he looked like he sounds he'd be wearing a necklace of human heads and even his reflection would turn you to stone. Matt Korvette screams out observations on the tedium and absurdity of adulthood, delivered in a fashion similar to the way people must sound when being waterboarded. Sometimes the band sounds like hearing yourself being bashed over the head with a snow shovel….

 MEDUSA: First Step Beyond
Numero
11th February 2013

Chicago’s reputation will forever be tainted by the horn-ravaged corniness of their eponymous band. Medusa’s First Step Beyond could have forever altered the perception of Chicago rock history had it managed to make the leap from tape to its destined vinyl pressing. Instead, this mish-mash of Sabbath, Hawkwind, and Amon Duul II remained petrified in the Corycian Caverns, or rather the drummer’s basement.

Self-produced on four track in 1975, the sole transmission from Medusa’s repertoire appeared on the extremely mysterious Pepperhead label, whose proprietor allegedly disappeared after a bad trip and has never been seen again.

 GOLDEN GRRRLS: s/t
Night School Records
25th February 2013

Golden Grrrls are Eilidh Rodgers, Ruari MacLean and Rachel Aggs. What began as a bedroom guitar experimentation soon bloomed in to a fully-formed language inspired by the 80s New Zealand and Australian indie pop scene and DIY punk. Drummer, Eilidh Rodgers' inventive, loose cannon drumming and lead vocals have framed MacLean's baritone from the beginning with newest member Rachel Aggs (also of Trash Kit) bringing an effortless melodic sensibility on guitar and backing vocals.

Their debut album, Golden Grrrls contains 11 perfect songs about life's realities dressed in 3 part harmonies, heart-tugging changes and a playing style derived from punk and c86 enthusiasm. Like contemporaries Twerps and Sea Lions, they've joined a lineage of pop essentialists such as The Clean and The Feelies - bands who never sacrifice melody to mere primitivism. Each chord, beat and vocal line is perfectly placed, essential and simply has to exist as it is in its moment in time.

THE EXPERIMENTAL TROPIC BLUES BAND: Liquid Love
Juane Orange
4th March 2013
Liquid Love – taking its name from a meeting club on Bedford Ave. NYC is an album about fantasies, sex, love and burgers - is The Experimental Tropic Blues Band’s first album produced by one of rock n roll’s leading experts, Jon Spencer.

With Spencer in the driving seat at NY HED studios everything you hear on Liquid Love – from the noisy pipes of the heating system and all the new instruments the band picked up for the first time - was recorded in the moment - spontaneity being the key. The tracks were all recorded directly onto analog tapes, the overdubs being cast aside and natural errors functioning to breathe life and make each track come alive.

The Experimental Tropic Blues Band - Boogie Snake, Dirty Coq and Devil D Inferno head at top speed belching their epileptic blues-rock.

The Experimental Tropic Blues Band tirelessly preach wild trashy dirty rock blues – raise you’re glass to the very core of rock n roll.

 SUUNS: Images Du Futur
Jagjaguwar
4th March 2013

SUUNS will release their second full-length album, Images Du Futur, via Secretly Canadian on 4th March 2013.

Produced once again by Jace Lasek from Besnard Lakes, Images Du Futur blasts out of the gate with "Powers of Ten," laying out a sort of manifesto for the record in the very first lines: "Got it together/I read in the paper/all of theses strangers/stranger and stranger.../No, no, no, no, how you try and remember/how all of these pieces/all fit together." Shemie says of the process, "As a band we were trying to look at our music from further and further away, seeing more details in the picture as we expanded the landscape."

The first single, "Edie's Dream," starts with a single repetitive bass line from which layers build & rise - first drums, then a wash of white noise; echoes of guitar, then chanted vocals. The song's clever shifts are jazz-touched and delicate, almost subliminal. It all makes for a stark, skeletal boogie — more an astral projection than a song, "Edie's Dream" shows us where Suuns are headed.

 FEEDING PEOPLE: Island Universe
Innovative Leisure
18th March 2013

Beyond the real deal is the unreal deal, and therein lies Feeding People: Jessie Jones (vocals) and Louis Filliger (guitarist) are teenagers making some of the heaviest psychedelica around, decades after the 13th Floor Elevators declared their hallucinatory sense of purpose.

Feeding People were founded by Jessie Jones, the nineteen-year-old who channels the raw power of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick and Janis Joplin at her most primal. With strong, almost vicious vocals - bellowing blasphemies as if possessed by spirits – masked with a sweetness reminiscent of Billie Holiday.

 MUDHONEY: Vanishing Point
Sub Pop
1st April 2013

25 years in, Vanishing Point decisively affirms that, even in an age where only the newest of the new can survive (and even then, only for a few weeks at best), Mudhoney still have plenty to say and more to offer. These are songs written from the rare vantage point of a band who went through the rock n’ roll meat-grinder and not only lived to tell such a tale, they came out full of the wisdom and dark humour such a journey provides.

Vanishing Point is filled with dread, psychoanalysis and Nuggets-on-fire riffs; the sort of real, uninhibited rock music that is harder and harder to locate these days. With Vanishing Point, Mudhoney makes it easy.
