Photographic Distinctions |
Can you please check that the photographic distinctions shown against your name at the head of this newsletter are correct. If they are incorrect or any are missing, please let Carol know, including the date when the change took place - send to her at membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
This will allow us to update the Roll of Honour on the BPS website and also keep the list of honours up to date for the AGM.

DI Group - Practical Evening |
Next Monday 12, May - This is NOT a Zoom meeting
Following Simon Caplan’s inspirational presentation at the last Digital Imaging Group on Still Life Photography, we are going to have another session taking still life/table-top images, drawing on the principals of composition and storytelling that that Simon spoke about.
Think about a subject you would like to photograph and bring some items that you can use to construct your image. Think about:
- Composition
- Story telling
- Colour harmony
- Textures
We will have items already in the studio so don’t worry if you don’t think you have any suitable items.
If you weren’t able to attend the last DI Group practical evening or would like some inspiration, take look at some of the links in the attached ‘reading list’ that Simon has recommended.
Look forward to seeing you all.
Rachel Domleo & Mike Martin.

The closing date for the Annual Print Competition is Wednesday, 28 May. There is a box for your entries on the stage in Unit 13.
The competition will be judged this year by Gareth Martin AWPF, CPAGB from Bridgend.
You may submit up to 4 prints and can use images already used in the bi-monthly competitions. But do not use images which you have already submitted for this year’s Annual PDI competition or which have gained awards in previous Annual Print competitions.
If you want to put any of your prints in for the open Nature section, tick the appropriate box on the print label.
In addition to the usual awards at each level, the judge will select the Best Travel, People, Action, Landscape and Monochrome pictures from the whole entry (i.e. all levels).
Please number your entries in your preferred order, as some images may be culled if the total entry is excessive.
IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to upload digital copies of your prints if you have not done so already for previous competitions. These should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there will be no need to give any other information than your name and the actual title of each image. Do, please, give the actual image titles, not just the image codes. Here is the upload link: www.bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload
We look forward to seeing your prints!

Distinctions Advisory Group |
Monday May 19. 7.30pm at the Clubrooms.
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and Pete McCloskey will be present to offer advice and review possible submissions for RPS and PAGB panels. ALL members who are either already on the path to distinctions or thinking about having a go are welcome, so come along with your images (prints or DPIs) to receive advice.
For the Licentiate the RPS only accept DPI submissions and no longer prints. Our advice was largely based on print submissions, but with the RPS changed rules we will offer advice on DPIs.
It is recommended that members read up on Distinctions on the RPS and PAGB websites as they contain much useful information:

The results were a bit disappointing, though it’s difficult to assess until we see the top images from other clubs when they are posted on the PSA site. The exception was in the colour section where we are in the third tier having moved up one division each season; and will do so again. Nature and Mono appear tougher albeit we are in the top division for both.
All that remains this season is the End of Year judging where the awarded images from this and the previous rounds are re-assessed to allocate individual awards. Fingers crossed for everyone.
Huge thank you to everyone who has provided images for consideration, been selected and especially those that have received awards – thank you all for your continued support, we couldn’t participate without you. Mike
Nature PDI – Round 3 – Division A
Scored 51 in what was a very low scoring round – we achieved a rather middling score (44 – 66 range) – end of year ranking equal 16th out of 24 in the top division, with a score of 182, the top club scoring 222.
Interestingly it appears one of the judges felt empowered to critique our (and others) images!
Open Mono PDI – Round 3 – Division A
Scored 58, towards the bottom of the range (51-70 range), though the critical judge didn’t provide any ‘feedback” on our images unlike the Nature or other clubs in this category. We finished 9th overall on 195, with the winning club scoring 205.
Open Colour PDI – Round 3 – Division C
A much better outcome in the Colour section – Year End ranked as 1st on 217 points, 10 ahead of the next club, and four awarded images, congratulations to the authors.

There is an exhibition by Bristol photographer, Oliver Bennett. His exhibition People on a Platform will be shown over a three-month period at the Sandwi Café in Clocktower Yard, on the approach to Bristol Temple Meads.
The collection of images documents a year at the historic station, where he returned month after month, at varying times of the day and week, to gauge the varying atmosphere of the place.

Photographers - Help Needed |
I have received the following from Isabella Harwood at UWE:
I am helping to organise UWE’s best of the west volleyball tournament, which runs over the weekends of either May 30/31st or the 12th/13th June and I was wondering if you’d have anyone that would be willing to come and capture some of either day!? I was wondering if any photographers or videographers out there would be interested as some really cool players from about 6 different universities will be participating.
This will hopefully be a great event and opportunity for all to experience Bristol music and culture. Performances and food stalls are planned and we would love to have you there! With universities including Bath, Warwick, Plymouth, Exeter, Bournemouth and Southampton, it promises to be an exciting day.
You can contact Isabella on 07387 889377 and Jack's (head organiser for the Best of the West tournament) is 07545 624919. Feel free to contact us, we would greatly appreciate it!!
From all of us at UWE VB
Thank you in advance,
Isabella Harwood

As some of you will know a defibrillator is due be installed outside of Unit 13 in the coming weeks. It is not exclusively for BPS but will be available to all units on the estate. It’s one thing having the defibrillator there, it is another to have people in BPS that know how to use it, and also to administer CPR if needed.
To this end we are arranging for a training session to take place at Unit 13 on Wednesday 21 May at 6pm. The session will be a combination of verbal and practical training and will last for approximately 1 hour.
We hope that you will be interested and attend this training session, the more members we have who can step up if it becomes necessary the better.
Looking forward to seeing you on the evening.

Well done to Derwood Pamphilon on having two of his prints accepted in the prestigious London Salon, Pink Skirt and Dancer Tintype, both of which are reproduced below:
|
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items
for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter.
Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full
description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
