Memorial Weekend
Kansas City Symphony presents Celebration at the Station
The largest FREE Memorial Day Weekend event in the Midwest.
The Kansas City Symphony, led by Music Director Michael Stern, perform patriotic favorites against the backdrop of Kansas City's historic Union Station and concludes with blazing fireworks above the National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial.
Memorial Day Ceremony
Located on the south side of the National WWI Museum, the Memorial Day Ceremony begins with a color guard parade and includes performances by the American Legion Band, a keynote address and other speeches to pay tribute to the day's significance. The Museum will open immediately following the ceremony (approximately 11 a.m.).

In the spirit of Memorial Day, why not visit a historically significant cemetery? The Union Cemetery Historical Society was founded in 1984 to restore, maintain and preserve the burial records and grounds of Kansas City, Missouri's oldest public cemetery, Union Cemetery, founded in 1857. It is the final resting place for many of those who founded and developed the towns of Westport and Kansas City.

In our last issue, we featured lavender syrup. We had an overwhelming response to it----who knew there were so many lavender lovers? To continue on a theme, we present an alternate use for this tender yet intense herb. Chives are prolific in many of your gardens, so here’s another fresh idea for the oniony herb. Sounds offbeat, yet it will tickle your springtime pallet.
Ingredients:
2 C Sharp White Cheddar Grated
1 C Mayonaisse
1/4 C Fresh Chopped Chive
1/4 C Fresh Lavender (stems removed)
Instructions:
Combine all of the ingredients in a food processor and mix until smooth. Transfer to a serving dish and allow to chill for at least one hour. Serve with crackers or fresh vegetables.

Those of you who are frequent visitors to Southmoreland have come expect to see our head housekeeper each morning, Amina. You won’t see her for the next month and a half….she is taking a whirlwind tour of Europe and Africa to visit family and friends. She is especially excited to see her grandchildren! We wish her a safe and very pleasant journey and will anxiously await her return. She is a fabulous co-worker who takes amazing care of the Inn and has great pride in ensuring that everything is fit as a fiddle for your stay!
