Hello, Firstname |

Next Wednesday we have the re-scheduled visit from Paul Sanders ARPS, when he will be presenting his talk entitled Solace: A Mindful Approach to Photography. Paul was a professional photographer working for Reuters and as Picture Editor of the Times, before starting a new career as a freelance landscape photographer.
This is a return visit by Paul, when he last came to BPS {in 2018) he gave us a behind the scenes look at the way a newspaper was put together coupled with an insight into
|
|
the pressures of the job he did at The Times. This presentation takes up the story as Paul leaves The Times to do something more fulfilling. His transition from News Photographer/Picture Editor to landscape photographer has not been without its ups and downs, so Paul will explain the way but more importantly the why he photographs. For Paul the connection with the subject is everything, his mindful practice extends through his photography. He totally admits that the technical side of photography is not of interest and all too often photographers obsess about the gear and forget about the image. The over-riding message in his presentation is shoot for yourself, which he expands on during the evening and features over 100 of his images. |
To see more of Paul's images, please visit his website by following this link. |
I am pleased to announce that at the next DI meeting will be on Monday 10 Feb, when we will have Jim Marsden FRPS EFIAP, our ex-BPS President, to talk about “Creative Photography - from Film to Pixels”. Jim is one of the pioneering members of the Society, who was keenly involved in creative photography from the days of film and transitioned into digital photography. His talk will take up one half of the evening. All members are invited to the DI meetings.
For the other half, members are invited to bring images for presentation as usual (prints or jpg images on a memory stick in a folder of your own name please).
I am still keen to hear from members who may be interested in Creative Imaging workshops. Please see BPS newsletter 365 of 3 January in the newsletter archive; this can be found in the Members' Area of the BPS website (Members' Login details: Username chatroom and password pixels).

Creative Image Competition |
This is a bit of an early reminder that the second running of the Creative Image Competition wull be held in July when members will have the chance to relieve our venerable Chairman of the wonderful Bob Faris Trophy that he won last July. I know that the closing date is a long way off (late June), but the way time seems to evaporate, before you know it the closing date will be upon you and you'll have nothing to enter. This reminder gives you plenty of time to get those creative juices flowing and produce some wonderful creative images, either prints or digital images.

Damien Demolder will be giving a presentation at our club night on Wednesday 26 Feb and will be doing a "Street Photography" workshop on Thursday 27 Feb. This is a practical hands-on day of learning how to improve your street photography through seeing in new ways.
Damien will demonstrate a range of principles around using light, finding backgrounds and working in public areas, and then will help the group to find their own way at their own pace. It's a day suitable for all levels of experience, and is certain to change the way you see and shoot - no matter what subjects you are usually interested in.
Cameras and lenses will be provided, by Panasonic so you only need to bring your imagination and memory cards.
Cost will be £35 per head and numbers are limited to 15 - (I have already had places booked! Steve)
Being on a "1st come 1st served" basis, the following have successfully booked their place on the Street Photography Workshop.
1 Ashwin Chauhan
2 Mike Hall
3 Jenny Morris
4 David Alderson
5 Joe Jancar
6 Robert Phelps
7 Glynnys Poole
8 Kevin Poole
9 Derek Ripper
10 Andrew Tandy
11 John Hudson
Using my "A" Level maths I have deduced there are just 4 places left.
Note - This is in addition to the Steve Russell Studios visit the same evening, so it promises to be a fun packed day"
A visit to Steve Russell Studios has been arranged for the evening of 27 Feb - time to be advised. There is a limit to numbers so a "pecking order" will be set up nearer the time.

There is an exhibition of photographs at Lacock Abbey: 'Adornments' by Carla van de Puttelaar. This exhibition is one which exhibits photographs that are inspired by the paintings by the Dutch Old Masters and (as reported by several BPS members who have already seen it) is well worth a visit.
The exhibition is open until 12 July and more details can be found by following this link.
Thanks to Mike Salter for this.
The following exhibitions are being held at the National Museum Cardiff.
- Martin Parr in Wales: Until 4 May
- Artist Rooms: August Sander: Until 1 March
- Bernd and Hilla Becher: Industrial Visions: Until 1 March
Full details on the Museum website.
Arnolfini - Bristol
Zanjir – Amak Mahmoodian
Until Sunday, 22 March, 11:00 to 18:00
Open Tuesday - Sunday, closed on Mondays.
Free
Amak Mahmoodian’s Zanjir (Translation: “chain”) presents a body of photographs that cross great distances – reaching through history to bring the earliest images of Iranian photography into the present, across oceans to invite Mahmoodian’s family and friends; and across the border between life and death.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year |
Wildlife Photographer of the Year – the world-renowned exhibition from the Natural History Museum – is back at M-Shed until 4 May with 100 new images. Now in its 55th year, Wildlife Photographer of the Year presents the most arresting and spectacular photography of our natural world. Encounter the beauty and fragility of wildlife, see fascinating animal behaviour and get to know extraordinary species. You’ll discover the surprising – and often challenging – stories behind the images during a time of environmental crisis.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind showcasing the world’s most astonishing sights for more than 50 years. Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives 48,000 entries from 100 countries.
It's worth reading the following from John Hudson:
I, like many, have been to this exhibition every year for I know not how long. I have been jaded to the point of thinking of it as a duty rather than a pleasure - especially in recent years when the "arty"-ness of the print was given more credit than its technical merit or content.
This year is different, back to good standards and some great images. I was pleasantly surprised and urge people to go along.

The 2020 Members Exhibition is now open for entry and will remain so until 7 March 2020
Any member of a WCPF affiliated club may enter. There are 3 print sections (Mono, Colour and Nature) and 4 projected image sections (Open, Creative, Nature and Photo Travel).
Anyone who has entered a previous exhibition will have received an ‘invitation to enter email’ containing a link to the entry system. The link is also available on the WCPF website.
Awards
In each class a PAGB Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal, 6 Selector PAGB ribbons and a number of Highly Commended Certificates will be awarded.
A ‘Best Wildlife’ trophy will be awarded in the digital and print Nature classes.
The ‘Margaret Aven’ trophy to the entrant with the most acceptances across all 7 classes The ‘Millennium Trophy’ for the best image in the exhibition.
Terms and Conditions
The class definitions can be seen on the entry website. They are those adopted by the PAGB.
Please note the Nature Definition has changed as has the manner in which Nature images will be viewed if entered into the Open or Colour classes. If entering the Photo Travel class, please review the information on that class and read the additional PSA conditions on the WCPF website (General Info Page). The PSA guidelines will be taken into consideration during the selection process particularly when selecting the awards. Please read the detailed conditions carefully before submitting your entry.
Favourite Print and Sale Of Prints
One of the visitors to the exhibition who votes for their favourite print will win a mounted copy of that print. The winner will be drawn from all votes recorded and their choice may not be the print that receives the most votes overall. We hope that entrants will participate in this initiative, but you can opt out when finalising your entry.
Sale Of Prints: Entrants may offer their accepted prints for sale to visitors. There is a standard price of £35 per print plus postage. Entrants will be informed of any purchase requests once the exhibition has closed., and it will then be their responsibility to deliver the print to the purchaser. Entrants can opt out when they finalise their entry.
The selectors this year are:
- Peter Gennard MFIAP EFIAP/p
- Jane Lines MPAGB BPE5
- Adrian Lines MPAGB MBPE EFIAP
We look forward to receiving your entries and creating another high-quality exhibition of images from the Federations’ photographers.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have anything to sell, or you're looking for something to buy, just let me know and I'll include it here. Please bear in mind, we only advertise items for BPS members.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website.
