Next Wednesday, 25 Jan, we have a presentation by well known natural history photographer, Liz Cutting ARPS DPAGB BPE4*, who's talk is called "A Wildlife Tour of East Anglia". The following is taken from her website:
My main photographic interest is Nature, especially birds, and to a lesser extent, moths and butterflies. Although I sometimes travel abroad to photograph wildlife, my first love remains the UK and especially my part of the world. Wildlife photography can be frustrating, but ultimately it is hugely rewarding. It is the witnessing of real wildlife encounters that is so fascinating.

DPIC - External Competitions
|
As a Western Counties Photographic Federation affiliated club, we always send an entry to the WCPF Digital Image Competition – Known as DPIC, which is held annually at Exeter. The competition is held between all WCPF affiliated clubs on Sunday February 5th at the Corn Exchange, Exeter. Details for getting ticket details for DPIC are on the WCPF website. Basis for Selection.During the year any pictures which gain a Highly Commended or higher in the bi-monthly and Annual exhibitions are held back and kept in our image bank. These pictures are then used to select our entry of 18 pictures for DPIC. This year our selection was made in the clubrooms by experienced BPS photographers, namely John Chamberlin, Barry Mead, Peter Smith, Pete Howell and Peter McCloskey. Records are kept of all our competition entries so that we make sure that images previously used are not resubmitted. If we are placed 1st or 2nd we go forward to the PAGB interclub finals which are held at Warwick in July. As we just failed to qualify last year, we will have more pictures to select from this year, if we are successful at Exeter; this is because you cannot use images that have been used before which means we have pictures from previous year that will therefore be eligible. The finals at Warwick are a good day out as you see a lot of successful pictures and old friends. As the Western Counties is part of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, we also enter the PAGB Cup, which is held at this time of year and is open to all clubs who are members of the Photographic Alliance. Our entry is based on the work we selected for DPIC. They have 2 categories Open and Nature,

Midnight Saturday is your last chance to enter the Bristol Salon (for free) if you haven't already done so. Details have been in the last few editions of the newsletter, so I won't repeat them again, however you can find full details, plus help with entering, by visiting the club website.
When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID. BPS members (of all grades an abilities) usually do pretty well in the Salon, so here's hoping that we see a rush of entries. In
the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

The WCPF Members' Exhibition opens for entry on 18 January with a closing date of 4 March. This is a competition for individuals who are members of WCPF member clubs. There are 3 print sections, Monochrome, Colour and Nature. In the Projected Image class, there are 3 sections - General, Nature and Creative. The entries are judged and the selected images will be exhibited later in the year at Bovey Tracey Golf Club followed by a two-day exhibition at the BPS clubrooms. More details on the WCPF websiteThe closing date coincides with WCPF Council meeting on 4 March and our representative, Danny Heaton, will be able to take your entries with him. If you have any queries you can contact Danny by email danny.heaton@btopenworld.com or you can collar him at any meeting.

The WCPF Knightshayes Trophy is nearly upon us and members are
invited to enter. The competition is organised by the WCPF and members
may enter up to two prints (mounted on 50 x 40 cm card) on the subject "Diffraction".
The closing date is 5 February when prints should be handed in at DPIC
in Exeter. Some BPS members will be going to DPIC (see above item) so it should be fairly
easy to organise for the prints to be taken down. More details can be
found here. |

John Hudson only entered one international exhibition last year (barring Bristol) in December 2016. This was the 1st International Salon of Photography, Ohrid, where he was awarded a Gold Medal for his image of a Pallid Bat Over Water.
Also successful on the international scene were Keith Wood, Val Duncan and Mike Bews who all entered the 5th Miroc Digital Circuit 2016 which covered Serbia, Russia, South Africa and Austria. Between them they gained 91 acceptances with Keith getting 33 (including 1 award), Val 46 (including 3 awards) and Mike 12 - well done to all 3. |
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
