Winter's Season of Service: Mentorship
This year we’ll be celebrating service by focusing on four important issue areas in 2012. We’re kicking off the year with the focus of Mentorship. It’s no coincidence that January is National Mentoring Month. National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us can work together to increase the number of mentors to assure brighter futures for our young people. To be a mentor, you don't need special skills, just an ability to listen and to offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a young person. And you'll be amazed by how much you'll get out of the experience. For some mentorship volunteer opportunities, click HERE>>>

Commemorating King's Birthday
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. This MLK Day offers a perfect time to re-commit to serving our community; join us on January 16 as volunteers beautify the campus of a Los Feliz school. MORE>>>

Video from Service Crawl LA:
A Race to Give Back
In celebration of 20 successful years of service to the community, L.A. Works spearheaded the first ever Service Crawl LA where teams of volunteers raced around Los Angeles engaging in diverse service projects at a variety of agencies. Volunteers solved clues that led them to each destination, gained points for completing tasks, and won prizes for their efforts. Check out this video that Jeff Hopkins, a longtime volunteer leader (Children of the Night and Reading Wheels projects), created for the Service Crawl LA event! MORE>>>

Volunteering: A Great Way to Learn Real Executive Leadership
Volunteer work isn’t just an outlet for people in search of more meaning in their work lives; it provides an excellent way to prepare for a senior executive position. By volunteering for projects in nonprofit organizations, experienced executives can hone their supervisory and leadership skills, and aspiring executives can gain the experience and networking opportunities that could lead to plum positions in the company. Because corporate managers volunteering in nonprofits don’t have titles to define their positions, they have to practice what some call “per mission leadership.” That is, they have to earn the trust and respect of the people they are supervising. Learn more about the benefits of volunteering at this Forbes blog by Richard Pound, MORE>>>

Discussing the "Drum Major Instinct", Occupy LA, and Working with Dr. King
Special guest Willy Leventhal will be leading a workshop for MLK Day of Service attendees interested in learning about and discussing Dr. King's philosophy on community service and activism. As one of five white Americans of the baby boomer generation who served on Dr. King's staff for many years, Willy Leventhal was described by Coretta Scott King as "... a dedicated voting rights worker in the south during a period of our history when it was one of the most dangerous vocations a person could have. At a time when most young people were preoccupied with personal advancement and recreational pursuits, Mr. Leventhal was experiencing beatings, imprisonment and long hours of sacrifice for the cause of greater equality and democracy in our nation."
