Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 19 August
Next Wednesday, 19 August, we will be seeing the NEMPF Travelling ExhibitionThis is a recorded presentation of the 2020 NEMPF annual print and projected image competition. This is a presentation we have had many times before and is one of the most professionally put together recorded presentations that we have had (Bristol Salon excepted!). NEMPF is similar to the WCPF and is the North & East Midland Photographic Federation; they hold an annual exhibition with entries from all the clubs in their federation. The accepted images are then put together as an audio-visual presentation with musical background and a commentary by Ashley Franklyn; Ashley is an ex BBC Radio presenter who provides the evening with an entertaining and very professional commentary.

Nikon Face Recognition!
Following on from John Hudson's tips for "Pin Sharp Focusing" last week, it might be worth considering upgrading your kit. If you are, then Nikon has got to be worth a look. Below is a typical example of their latest "face recognition" system:

A bit sexist, I know, but it certainly made me put Nikon in the frame!

You can blame John Chamberlin for this, as it was he who sent it to me.

DI Group Talk - Photoshop Brushes
Last Monday, at the DI Group meeting, Mike Martin gave a quick tour of the Brush Properties tab in Photoshop showing how to customise brush shapes to create hairs, balloons, tinsel, using the Shape Dynamics, Scattering, Colour Dynamics options before going on to create his own leaf brush, shards of glass from a triangle, and storm/explosion brush starting with a cloud!

Here are a couple of images Mike created using his custom brushes

To close, Mike recommended a couple of digital artists to follow on YouTube:

  • Nemanja Sekulic (thoroughly recommend the Fire Effect and Frost Effect tutorials – hint: if you can watch on one screen with finger hovering over the pause button and follow in PS step by step)
  • Piximperfect (for loads of detail retouching guides)
If you missed Mike’s demo, Matt has added a recording of the talk in the members’ section of the BPS website under ‘Guides’ and the DIG section under the ‘Special Interest Groups’ section – you’ll need to log in to view this.

The Wave - A Cautionary Word
I received the following words of caution from BPS member, Paul Moran:

The Wave is the new Bristol surfing lake with artificial waves. It re-opened last week, and is located at Easter Compton (near Cribbs Causeway). I asked them if I could turn up and take photos (entrance cost for non-surfers is £2) and their response was ‘yes, but you can only take pictures of surfers you know’ and for personal use only. So that’s effectively blocking most of us from a great photo opportunity.

Flash Triggers
The following from Mike Hall:

Following on from Steve Gettle’s excellent presentation last week, I can recommend the MIOPS camera/flash trigger available here miops-smart-triggers. I purchased one a few months back and it is excellent and a fraction of the cost of the Cognysis system shown by Steve. It is multifunctional and can do almost all the functions demonstrated in Steve's talk. For those members wishing to pursue some wildlife photography in the confines of their own kitchen it’s a great piece of kit!

CFExpress Cards
Many new cameras are specifying that you use CFExpress cards to record your images. The following link takes you to an article titled CFexpress cards explained: What are CFExpress Types A, B and C? which demystifies the whole subject.
Thanks to Keith Wood for this.
