Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 27 October
DON'T FORGET - 7PM START

This week we start at 7pm as we are being presented with an award for being the "club with the mostest" in last year's Masters of Print exhibition.

Next Wednesday, we welcome John Perriam ARPS DPAGB AFIAP to BPS, when he will present Photography - Mostly for Fun and Creativity.
This will entail various short digital presentations and AVs that hopefully inspire experimentation and creative work with the emphasis on “fun”. A selection of prints for viewing will be provide for viewing.
Just to be different, have a look at John's Flickr stream for inspiration https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnperriam/

Zoom Meetings - Important Update
There are a couple of things that need to be brought to the fore this week:

Rising Covid infection rates - in view of the increase in the Covid infection rate in Bristol, members attending meetings at Unit 13 are advised that we should adhere to the Government Guidelines, ie that seating is kept well spaced (couples exempt from spacing!) and masks should be worn when moving about the clubrooms, but can be removed when seated. Please also remember to use the hand sanitizer on arrival.

Recent Rumours - Rumours appear to have been circulating among members about BPS Council's policies on hybrid meetings. A typical comment received by me was "I got wind of a comment sometime ago that we would keep the zoom quality down to ensure members attend in person rather than opt to stay at home". The BPS Council needs to stop this rumour dead in its tracks. As stated by the Chairman at the last meeting, BPS Council policy is not now and never has been to limit Zoom quality for this or any other reason. At the outset, when hybrid meetings were first discussed, BPS (in line with many other clubs) were of the opinion that the Country would probably be returning to something like normality in the New Year, or at worst Spring of 2022 and as such were only initially planning to run hybrid meetings until that time. Since that initial time, things and ideas nationally have changed dramatically and we no longer have a deadline for these meetings, as a result of which it was decided quite early on that we would do whatever was necessary to provide a long lasting system that made viewing from home a pleasure and a suitable alternative to attending in person. This meant spending whatever was required to achieve this and from the beginning have employed the services of a company specialising in this type of installation. They are working very hard to come up with a solution to our current problems, which we hope will happen in the very near future.

Sad News

Gordon with Margaret at the opening of our new clubrooms.

Many members will remember Gordon Thomas ARPS, who was a member of BPS for many years, but owing to failing health had not been able to attend meetings for some time. We have heard from Gordon's long-time partner, Margaret Collis, that he sadly died  in the BRI on 11 October after an illness. Gordon joined BPS in 1986 and was a good all round photographer, however he specialised in landscapes which had what can only be described as images with impact and feelings. We should not forget, though, that he produced some wonderful colour images and it is difficult to forget his very soft, pastel seascapes.
Among Gordon's contribution to the Society were his terms as Programme Secretary and subsequently as Chairman.

Our thoughts go out to Margaret and Gordon's family.

PAGB Interclub Print Competition
The PAGB Interclub Print Competition is being held this Sunday, 24 October, at the Smethwick PS clubrooms and the judging is being Zoomed live from 10am, although we think that the actual judging doesn't start until 11am. Below are thumbnails of the prints that will be representing BPS:

External Competitions
Photographic Society of America (PSA) - Competitions

After a long gap the BPS council members have decided it’s about time we regained some international recognition befitting a club of our standing.

Whilst these are Club competitions, the best individual authors will receive individual awards.

To that end I have registered Bristol Photographic Society to participate in the following competitions.

PDI
  • Open Colour
  • Open Mono
  • Nature ** NB the PSA rules are changing from 1 Jan 2022, so the competition will operate under two sets of Nature rules. Details: click here
  • Travel
  • Creative
These are run over 3 rounds – the highest placed clubs get promoted to the next division in each annual cycle.

For each of the round we require 6 images from different authors.  The first-round deadline is 15 November – so watch out for a request to use your image(s).

Prints
There are 5 categories for un-mounted prints.  As with PDIs these are run over 3 rounds - the highest placed clubs get promoted to the next division in each annual cycle.

The print competitions run with up to four images from different authors in each round – timing is a bit more critical for these as we have to allow for international postage
  • Large Color [ 11x14 to 16x20], effectively A3
  • Large Monochrome [ 11x14 to 16x20], effectively A3
  • Small Color [SC, 5x7 to 8½ x12], up to A4
  • Small Monochrome [SM, 5x7 to 8½ x12], up to A4
  • Creative Altered Reality [CAR, 5x7 to 16x20, color or mono]. Either A4 or A3

NOTE: prints are to be un-mounted.  Anyone wishing to participate but not wishing to print your own entry, that shouldn’t be a barrier - let me have a full resolution digital file and I’ll print for you J

As we haven’t entered since 2013, we should have a healthy pool of images to draw upon, the only restrictions being that
  • an image cannot be used more than once in an individual competition (for example an image used as colour could be re-entered as mono in subsequent rounds but not re-entered into the colour section)
  • a print image cannot be resubmitted in a different class in the same year
  • any image that receives an award (1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM) in any competition cannot be used in any further competitions (other than the end of year competition for awarded images).

IMPORTANT  - IMAGE RELEASES
Being an American organisation they are very strict on photographers granting permission to them to enable them to judge and share (winning) images.   They therefore insist that any photographer whose image is used, must complete an image release PRIOR to submission.

It makes sense therefore for anyone interested in being considered to complete the attached release form.  I shall obviously chase anyone where we want a specific image if you haven’t already completed a release form.

Sorry if this sounds a bit bureaucratic – it’s their rules! And, it shouldn’t be too onerous as each release covers usage of all / any images used for 3 years.

To get ready please either:
  • print, sign and hand me a copy at Unit 13 at one of the weekly meetings
  • print, sign, photograph or scan (or add an electronic signature, using a tablet and pen, for example), and return to me by email
  • sign a copy in Unit 13 at one of the weekly meetings

DEADLINE FOR FIRST ROUND:  15 November for PDI, 10 November for Prints
NB.  For the print sections our internal deadline is obviously earlier to allow time for prints to be sent!

This is a great opportunity to benchmark yourself and BPS against some of the best photographers and clubs globally.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Every penny raised will be going towards looking after our animals over the festive period and beyond.

Here are some details about our event: https://www.bristolarc.org.uk/events/view/festive-fair-2021

If you would like to know more about the day, please feel free to get in touch with me by email at mbarrett@bristolarc.org.uk or call me on 01179803903. Please share my details with anyone who may be interested.
