1 Timothy 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone -- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
A HOLIDAY FOR PRAYER
Today in the United States many will celebrate the Independence Day holiday. American flags will be unfurled, fireworks will grace the skies, and bands will play. It will be a day for patriotism and things national. Yet as we wave our flags, let's make sure that we do so also with prayer and thanks to God.
The Apostle Paul urges us to pray for "kings and all those in authority." We pray for all federal office holders, state leaders and representatives, county and local government officials, and all those who represent them or operate under their authority.
At times it might be hard for us to pray for these men at women. Perhaps we don't like our leaders or disagree with their policies or personalities. However, we should not stop asking God to bless those who hold the rule over us, for when the government carries out its duties and responsibilities (keeping the peace, protecting the citizens, etc.) then the gospel is able to go forth all the more freely for the benefit of all. We pray that the Lord would grant our rulers success in all things that are not against His will. We pray that they be diligent and faithful in carrying out their rule over us.
Wherever you may live, pray that your homeland be free from troubles and strife so that many may hear the gracious words of Jesus, the ultimate "public servant," who came to give His life as a ransom for all.
