Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 3 November

Next Wednesday, we will be having a Zoom meeting with a difference, it is being Zoomed directly from the speaker's abode in South Wales. The speaker in question is Phil Savoie and the talk is entitled Principles of PhotographyA photographic journey of self-improvement. Learn how to up your photo game with award-winning cameraman Phil Savoie.

This talk covers topics not often discussed from the science of our vision, lens testing & optical physics, eyeline and the psychology of perspective as well as the odd location war story.
The thrust of Principles of Photography is to share easy, practical shooting methods resulting in a noticeable improvement straight away. The aim is to educate, increase visual intelligence and inspire while having fun doing it. Pro tips for participants to grow as photographers- to produce higher image quality, advance storytelling and develop artistic acumen. Illustrated with local British images, covering all genres from landscape to sport, wildlife, people and astrophotography.

What to expect: Principles of Photography is a big talk focused on how to achieve better pictures catering to all levels from beginner to pro. We will address photographic foundations often missed out. Members will be encouraged jot down questions in the chatbox to revisit during the break or the end Q&A discussion. Principles of Photography isn't the normal 'muscle flexing' photo talk commonly seen at clubs. It offers useful practical information and professional operating tips that members can apply to their own work. Phil is a very passionate photographer and genuinely wants to help others improve.

This is a meeting that comes highly recommended by other clubs and will be well worth watching in the clubrooms in glorious Technicolour and CinemaScope with super Dolby Surround sound.

Masters of Print
Last Wednesday, many of you will have seen Steve Field accept an award on behalf of BPS. As mentioned by Rod Whelans, BPS had won the award for the most successful club in last year's exhibition.

Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize
I have received the following which is self explanatory:

I am writing on behalf of the Friends of the Ridgeway. And to bring to the attention of members of your Club a photographic prize.

The Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize will be held next year in April 2022.  There will be both an exhibition in Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington and an associated online exhibition. A Flyer for the competition is attached along with the competition Rules and Entry Form.

The Ridgeway – the oldest road in Britain – historically was a trackway providing a reliable trading route from the Dorset coast along the chalk Downs to the Wash in Norfolk. Today it is not only the oldest road but part of that original route is a National Trail; it is also a wonderful resource for all the communities that live along its route, not just walkers where visitors and locals alike can enjoy walking, riding or just being there.  The Friends of the Ridgeway, a voluntary organisation and registered charity, is committed to the preservation in perpetuity of all the natural aspects and features of the ancient Ridgeway. Details of the Friends are at http://www.ridgewayfriends.org.uk/

The aim of the competition is to bring The Ridgeway to life not only as a long distance trail but as an artistic inspiration, and to show The Ridgeway, its history and environs, in all their aspects throughout all seasons. In this context Ridgeway refers to the full length of the ancient tracks running along the chalk down land from Dorset to Norfolk and not just The Ridgeway National Trail. The theme of the competition is ‘Spirit of the Ridgeway’.

There will be separate classes for (i) wall art (including painting, drawing, etching, textile pictures and wall hangings, and mosaics), (ii)  sculpture (including ceramics), (iii)   photography (including digital art), and (iv) writing (poetry or prose).

For 2022 there will be an exhibition in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington (Broad Street, Uffington, Oxfordshire, SN7 7RA), located in the centre of the beautiful and historic rural village of Uffington in the Vale of the White Horse, with an associated online exhibition. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 2 April and Sunday 3 April 2022 with an associated online exhibition. The prize giving will be Sunday 3 April 2022 as part of the Ridgeway Friends Day.

A Flyer for the Competition along with the Rules and Entry Form for the 2022 Competition are attached. We hope that the competition and resulting exhibition will be as interesting and exciting as previous years.

This prize may be of interest to your members and I would be grateful if you could bring the competition to the notice of members.
