ABOUT DEMOCRAT ANTHONY
HARDY WILLIAMS
Anthony
Hardy Williams first joined the
Pennsylvania Senate in 1998, his second stop in the state Legislature.
He began his journey at 31, first winning office as a state representative
for the 191st Legislative District.
The 8th
Senatorial District represents the tapestry of the Commonwealth
– and nation – with its economic, ethnic, religious,
and geographic diversity, stretching across Delaware and Philadelphia
counties. His constituents are in small towns such as Ridley Park,
suburban enclaves such as Yeadon, and urban communities in South,
West, and Southwest Philadelphia.
As
a legislator, Williams works to provide opportunities for residents
of his district and beyond, with improving consumer protections,
educational access, and economic development underlying his initiatives.
He remains unafraid to challenge popularly held conventions if
such moves will improve the lives of his constituents.
Issues
he has tackled include ending unfair insurance credit scoring
practices; curbing energy rate hikes; ensuring educational options
for residents of Philadelphia; and increasing environmental awareness
through pocketbook issues, among others. Williams has
authored more than two dozen bills and works to increase political
participation and awareness among every citizen of every age.
He is an original architect of school reform legislation for Philadelphia
and a leader in the movement to expand the pipeline of scientific
investigators and entrepreneurs of color in the biosciences industry.
He
serves as Democratic chairman of the State Government Committee
and is a member of the Education, Banking and Insurance, Finance,
and the Environmental Resources and Energy committees, and the
Life Sciences Caucus. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania
Council of the Arts and chairs the Black Elected Officials of
Philadelphia County, an ad-hoc group encompassing federal, state
and municipal politicians of color and the Philadelphia Democratic
United Ward Leaders of Color, a group comprised of ward leaders
of color who represent various wards within the City of Philadelphia.
A former
corporate executive and entrepreneur, the Franklin & Marshall
College grad and his wife, Shari, have two daughters, Asia and
Autumn.
