John 2:11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
SIGNS AND SIGNALS
Who was Jesus? Down through the years many different answers have been given to this question. Among these views: Jesus was a teacher of morality. He was a champion of the cause of the poor. He was very good man. The Jehovah's Witnesses religion sees Jesus as a created being (like we all have been created). The religion of Islam views Him as a great prophet (but not nearly as great as Mohammed).
Though there is a wide divergence of opinions about Jesus' identity, there is only one right answer, and the Bible reveals it in a clear way. It does this by recording many of the mighty deeds He performed while He lived and walked on earth. All these mighty deeds were signs and signals by which He pointed people to His identity as the omnipotent Son of God. The Holy Spirit caused these miracles to be written on the pages of Scripture so everyone might believe that Jesus the man is also God's Son and so possesses the ability to repair the fractured relationship that existed between sinners and their holy God. Because Jesus did things like changing water to wine, restoring vision to blind people, and raising the dead (not to mention, raising Himself), we know He could and did perform the greatest work ever: putting things right between us and God.
Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme,
And at Cana, Wedding-guest, In Thy Godhead manifest;
Manifest in power divine, Changing water into wine.
Anthems be to Thee addressed God in man made manifest.
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 134:2)
