John 5:17-18 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working." Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

ETERNAL SON OF THE FATHER

Do you have someone you would call your "best friend?" Is there someone who has the same interests in life and who really understands you? Do you feel that you could talk to your best friend about any and everything, even very personal matters?

We have different relationships, some deeper than others.

But if we try to compare the closeness of our earthly relationships with the relationship between God the Father and God the Son, we will find that there is no comparison. The relationship between the Father and the Son is closer than any human relationship can be. For though the Father and the Son are separate and distinct persons, the Bible teaches that they are at the same time one and the same God.

Jesus tells us here that as close as their relationship as Father and Son, just so close was their focus and purpose.

When Jesus referred to God as "My Father" He wasn't saying the same thing as we are when we say that God is our Father. God is our father by faith in Christ. We are adopted into that relationship. I might call God "my Father" when praying alone, but it would be blasphemy for me to claim what Jesus did. Jesus was saying, "God is My Father, because I am God’s SON."

Jesus stands in a special personal relationship with God the Father because Jesus is God together with Him. In calling God "My Father" Jesus was making himself equal with God. The Jews who heard Jesus speak understood this, and they wanted to kill Him for it.

We rejoice to know this about Him because He rose and lives and reigns for our benefit!
