EUROPA NOSTRA ANNUAL CONGRESS 2011: AMSTERDAM, 7-11 JUNE
The Europa Nostra Annual Congress will take place next year on June 7-11 in the World Heritage City of Amsterdam, bringing together Europa Nostra members and representatives of the entire cultural heritage movement from all over Europe. Again, the highlight will be the European Heritage Awards Ceremony celebrating the future winners of the 2011 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. Read more

Europa Nostra Secretary General, Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, interviewed our new President in Mantua (Mantova) in the midst of the rehearsals for the opera performance "Rigoletto a Mantova" which was broadcasted live all over the world. VIDEO INTERVIEWS WITH EUROPEAN COMMISIONER ANDROULLA VASSILIOU AND MEP DORIS PACK
The European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou, and Member of the European Parliament Doris Pack tell in video interviews of the importance, impact and relevance of saving and promoting Europe’s cultural heritage through restorations, education and other awareness raising initiatives, illustrated in winning projects of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. EUROPA NOSTRA WELCOMES TWO NEW EUROPEAN SITES ON UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE LIST
Europa Nostra congratulates the two new European sites that were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Last August, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee elected the canal zone of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the old city of Albi in France to be included in this most famous list of 911 world heritage sites. HANDOVER OF EUROPA NOSTRA’S PRESIDENCY AT TEATRO REAL IN MADRID
Europa Nostra’s former President, HRH the Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón, was delighted with the recent election of Plácido Domingo as the new President of Europa Nostra. For Doña Pilar, Plácido Domingo is the ideal President for the new era of Europa Nostra: "The protection of architectural, cultural and natural heritage must now become a concern for all Europeans." INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS QUESTIONNAIRE
In order to reach out to Individual Members and obtain a better insight of what Europa Nostra means to them and what they expect from us, and also to assess if and how they can contribute to the work of Europa Nostra, an initiative has been developed which commences with a Questionnaire, which has just been mailed to all Individual Members. It is hoped that many of them will take this opportunity to let their voices be heard by completing the Questionnaire. Conveniently, the document may be filled in online on our website (but can also be faxed or mailed), and, to emphasise the importance we attach to this exercise, is available in five languages. A THREE-YEAR COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH LAPPONIA
Europa Nostra and Lapponia Jewerly have started a 3 year cooperation agreement. The Finnish company will donate 5% of the sales of its Pretty Earth necklace to Europa Nostra and its cause. Lapponia wishes to join forces with Europa Nostra in safeguarding Europe's cultural and natural heritage. Read more
FUTURE EU CULTURE PROGRAMME CONSULTATION
On 15 September 2010, following the adoption of the “Europe 2020” Strategy in June 2010, the European Commission launched an online consultation on a future EU Culture Programme, which will replace the current one from 2014 onwards. The deadline is 15 December 2010. Read more Français
UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF CULTURAL AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
In July 2010, Europa Nostra submitted its contribution to the online public consultation launched by the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, on the Green Paper “Unlocking the potential of cultural and creative industries”. This contribution was prepared with the cooperation of our Dutch member organisation Erfgoed Nederland and was also endorsed by the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO). Read more
EUROPE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE: A CHALLENGE
The Immovable Heritage Policy Area of the Flemish Government is organising, within the framework of the Belgian EU Presidency, the Conference: “Europe and Cultural Heritage: a Challenge. Towards a European Cultural Heritage Strategy” on 9 December 2010 in Bruges (Belgium). Europa Nostra will be well represented by members who will be attending EN Board and Council meetings in Bruges the following days. EN Secretary General was also invited to take part the round table debate in the afternoon of the conference. Read more
STUDY ON YOUTH ACCESS TO CULTURE IN EUROPE
On 13 September 2010, the Directorate-General for Education and Culture presented the Study on Youth Access to Culture in Europe carried out by the Interarts Foundation, following a call for tenders for the study by the European Commission. Read more
BRINGING EUROPE’S CULTURAL HERITAGE ONLINE
On 28 October 2010 in Brussels, the Reflection Group (Comité des Sages) on Bringing Europe's cultural heritage online which has been set up by the European Commission will report on recommendations on how best to speed up the digitisation and online accessibility of cultural material. Europa Nostra contributed to the public online consultation which closed on 30 September. Read more
EUROPEAN HERITAGE FORUM AND EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS
On 1-2 October 2010, the Council of Europe and the European Union, in cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, held the 3rd European Heritage Forum, closing the 2010 edition of the European Heritage Days, in Istanbul - European Capital of Culture 2010. Europa Nostra was represented by its Board member Piet Jaspaert. Read more
EUROPEAN TOURISM POLICY & EUROPEAN HERITAGE
On 27 September 2010, EN Board member Piet Jaspaert and EN Staff member Louise van Rijckevorsel (European Affairs) attended the conference “The role of European Heritage and cultural itineraries in the renewed European tourism policy” in Brussels, organised by DG Enterprise and Industry on the occasion of World Tourism Day. CULTURAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES IN OTHER EU PROGRAMMES
The EU Culture Programme is specifically dedicated to funding cultural activities in Europe; however, there are many other opportunities for funding for operators with a cultural project involving other sectors. We advise you to visit the new section of the DG Education and Culture website to find more information about the funding of your cultural projects within EU programmes on Citizenship, Media, Research, Education and Training, Youth and Enterprises. On 6-7 September 2010, Europa Nostra took part in the CultureWatchEurope Conference 2010 entitled “Culture and the policies of change” at the headquarters of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. The Conference is one of a series of events being organised in the framework of the Council of Europe’s CultureWatchEurope initiative and was supported by several partners. Read more

THE BEST IN HERITAGE: 2010 EDITION (23-25 SEPTEMBER, DUBROVNIK)
On 23-25 September 2010 “The Best in Heritage” event once again provided a stage for the exchange of ideas, innovations and contacts in the field of museums, heritage and conservation. The City of Dubrovnik, with its Mediterranean charm combined with the warm ambiance of the “Marin Držić” Theatre, provided an inspiring setting suitable for the direct and lively presentation of concepts and views. Europa Nostra is the main partner of this event and we can surely say that this year’s conference was a huge success.

LE SALON INTERNATIONAL DU PATRIMOINE (4-7 NOVEMBER, PARIS)
From 4-7 November, Europa Nostra will be present at the International Heritage Show , the “Salon international du patrimoine culturel”, taking place at the Carrousel du Louvre, in Paris. The Theme for 2010 is “The Mediterranean Heritage”. In 15 years, the show has hosted 281,389 visitors, 3,632 exhibitors and 368 conferences. Open to everyone involved in the heritage field, combining culture and economics, the International Heritage Show is both a showcase for quality craftsmanship, and heritage venues and sites. EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON CIVIL SOCIETY AND HERITAGE (5-6 JULY, MECHELEN)
Following the successful Conference "Heritage Care through Active Citizenship" held in March 2009, a 2nd European Conference on Civil Society and Heritage was held on 5-6 July 2010 in Mechelen (Belgium), during the Belgian Presidency of the European Union. Europa Nostra was again partner and took an active role in its realisation.
The 2010 Conference focused on the role of volunteers in the Cultural Heritage field and Board member Piet Jaspaert moderated one of the 4 workshops: “The Value of Cultural Heritage for Society”.
The Conference was very successful and gathered many participants from all over Europe.

HERITAGE IN PERIL
ALLIANOI ABOUT TO BE SACRIFICED
Turkish NGO “Allianoi Initiative” led by Professor Ahmet Yaraş, have witnessed the “burying” of Allianoi: only the tops of Allianoi’s excavated walls and columns can be seen poking through as the site is being buried under sand! Workers employed by the Turkish State Waterworks Directorate are filling this outstanding Roman archaeological site with sand before submerging it under the planned reservoir behind the Yortanli irrigation dam whose effective life-span is not expected to exceed 50 years. EN Executive President Denis de Kergorlay wrote to top Turkish Government officials to urge a stop to the destruction of Allianoi and a move to develop the area for sustainable cultural and health tourism. PLACIDO DOMINGO: “THE HISTORIC HEART OF L’AQUILA MUST BE SAVED”
Europa Nostra President Plácido Domingo contributed an urgent appeal to save the Italian historic city of L'Aquila and the distinctive villages and cultural landscape of the surrounding Italian Abruzzo Region which were affected by the April 2009 earthquake. Italia Nostra continues to fight for the rapid repair of L’Aquila’s damaged buildings as the city’s citizens try to regain access to their homes (see video clip). “What is currently happening in L’Aquila is very, very sad. People have not only lost their houses, they have lost the memory and the roots which are connected to the historic city of L’Aquila….This wonderful expression of the soul of Italy and Europe must not be lost for future generations.” said Domingo”. ROSIA MONTANA CAMPAIGN MOVES TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Europa Nostra and Member organisation “Pro Patrimoinio” are organising a meeting on 23 November 2010 at the European Parliament in Brussels to draw the attention of the MEPs to and ask their support for our campaign to stop plans to utterly destroy the natural beauty and cultural significance of the Rosia Montana area with large scale open pit gold mining and the resulting poisonous slag. Rosia Montana contains ancient mine galleries dating back to the Roman times. Earlier this year, Executive President Denis de Kergorlay wrote to the Romanian Minister of Culture (29/03/2010) in support as he works to convince his government that the preservation of this site is the best choice. Beautiful Hardanger Fjord and 3 spectacular side fjords on its northern side continues to be under threat! The pristine nature and the exceptional cultural landscape of the fjords of Western Norway are outstanding in a European and International context. HERITAGE TOURS 2011: REGISTER NOW!
The 2011 Heritage Tours Brochure has just been issued and has been sent to Members. There will again be a fine choice of original and fascinating tours, during which a strong variety of sights, including numerous private properties otherwise closed to the general public, will be seen. As usual, the proceeds of the tours are to benefit our activities in central and eastern Europe and the Heritage in Peril campaign. The programme comprises tours to Morocco (19 – 28 March), Valencia and surroundings (3 – 9 May), Mecklenburg Vorpommern ( 13 – 18 September) and finally Salzburg (a short pre-Christmas tour on 8 – 12 December). The tours are open to all Individual Members and to members of our Member Organisations, and it is hoped that they will be strongly supported, so as to ensure an attractive financial benefit for the worthy purposes enumerated above.

EUROPEAN HERITAGE AWARDS CEREMONY IN AMSTERDAM ON 10 JUNE 2010
As highlight of the 2011 Europa Nostra Annual Congress, the European Heritage Awards Ceremony will take place next year on June 10 in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam’s world famous historic concert hall. The future winners of the 2011 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards will be celebrated in the ceremony which will be presided by Europa Nostra’s new President Plácido Domingo, and Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the European Commission responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. You can watch all the videos that were shown during the 2010 European Heritage Awards Ceremony at Aya Irini in Istanbul last June. These clips introduce each Laureate awarded in the 2010 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards and explain the significance of the 29 winning projects. Every week we will be putting on the website homepage the video presenting one of our 2010 Laureates.
