Nina Always Nina
Her sweet face was
as soft and white
as the finest silk
gray eyes like an early dawn
a heart-shaped little mouth
pink and sweet
like a new peach picked from a tree.
Her skin as delicate
and soft as new woven velvet,
her hair fine, black and shiny.
A better daughter there never was.
She was loyal and generous beyond.
Her soul and spirit
of this world were not.
Our good angel, our Alfonsina
her journey here was spent
helping others everywhere
she spread love and kindness to all.
She never complained
in spite of all the pain
and the seizures that began
on the day she was born.
Seizures, her constant companion
beset her all her life.
She faced epilepsy stoically
never uttered a word of despair,
hope and faith sustained her.
She was our guiding light
as she was to hundreds of others.
She will be the light and hope
for all those that suffer
“the sacred illness,” “epilepsy”, so named
by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine.
The universe is much too small
there are no words, none that
can express the sorrow and great emptiness
that we feel. We are devastated
Nina your absence is unbearable.
we miss your love, your presence
your laugh, your sweet smile
we are lost without you.
You were the sunshine that kept us warm.
Our darling daughter,
you are and always will be
an inspiration for all of us,
your parents students friends and colleagues.
You will inspire thousands
who will remember you through your
“Chair,” established for research
to help millions like you
who suffer from the “sacred disease.”
You will be the light of hope
until a cure is found
for this dreadful, devastating disease.
You will provide strength and hope
to all those who read your story.
You will inspire them to keep fighting
to eradicate the prejudice and stigma
that surrounds anyone with seizures.
Your kindness and courage
as you faced cruelty and adversity
will be an example that will drive others
to fight to end discrimination
to never give up.
Our dearest Nina, your stay
in this valley of tears
was much too short.
You had just begun to live,
When one terrible night
the breath that gives life
stopped and took you from us.
You went to sleep and never woke up.
The horror of that night can never be
told with mere words, we died with you.
Nina, you rose to heaven peacefully from your bed
an angel you were and as an angel you left.
Your memory gives us the strength
to keep working for your cause,
to find a cure for epilepsy.
Our Nina,You will live within our hearts and minds
until the day we meet again.
We love you so very much.
