From the Church Guy
Have you noticed the War of the Tee Shirts?

Summertime is always t-shirt season, with lots of colors and slogans.  I noticed that there might be a Tee Shirt War.  This summer, I saw a lot of shirts with these words: "Life is good."  But I've also seen some which say, "Life is crap."

I'd say that's a basic disagreement about life, the universe, and everything.

Scientists ask the question, "Is the universe friendly?"  In other words, is life common in our universe because conditons allow for it, or is life completely rare, or even confined to our own planet only?

People of faith ask the question, "Is God love?"  In other words, is the power behind the universe harsh and judgemental, or gracious and full of compassion?

Is life good, or is life crap?  I'll take a side in that argument.  Life is good, God is gracious, and even in suffering, we get strength to carry on.

And that's the goodness we celebrate every Sunday at St. Mark's!

 An Intern at St. Mark's!
Lisa Busby is a member of Grace Church, Cortland, and she is also a seminary student training for the Priesthood.  She is a student of General Theological Seminary in New York City.

One of the requirements is for her to do an internship in a parish, and the bishop has asked Father Mark to be her supervisor in the coming academic year.  So Lisa will join us beginning on Sunday, September 7.  This is an important part of training a parish priest, and Father Mark fondly remembers his own internship back in the 1980s in Chicago, and is eager to serve Lisa and the diocese as a mentor.

Lisa will participate in our liturgies, preach on occasion, and experience the various aspects of our life as a congregation.  She is looking forward to her year with us with pleasure.

There is no doubt that St. Mark's is an excellent parish for future clergy to experience.  Please give Lisa and her husband Gary a warm welcome to our church family.

We want to thank God for you!
In our prayers together each Sunday, we always give thanks to God for those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries.  But we don't want to miss anyone!  If you attend St. Mark's but do not hear your name in the week of your birthday or anniversary, please let us know.

We are required to record basic data about our members, and need your help to keep our records accurately.  If you are a member of St. Mark's, or would like to be, we need your date and place of birth, your date and place of baptism, and date and place of Confirmation (if applicable), year included.

We are thankful for all of our people.  And we hope you'll make sure we have your information.

Come to the Table...the St. Mark's Table!
On the third Tuesday of the month, some of us gather at 6 pm for a potluck meal, some singing together, and a simple Eucharist...all in the undercroft.  It's a relaxed evening for a little bit of music and worship, some good food, and a whole lot of friendship.

Join us on Tuesday, September 16.  No sign up needed.  Just bring your own dishes and tableware, and food to share (a main course, or a salad, or a dessert).  It's only an hour and a half, and you'll enjoy it.

Teachers Needed for 2014/2015 Church School Year
Do you enjoy working with children?  Have you thought about becoming more involved in the life of St. Mark's?  Want to combine the two?  Then talk to Mary Taylor about the possibility of becoming a Sunday school teacher!  It will be a learning experience for both the children and you.

Church school begins on September 14 with a welcome back gathering in the undercroft.  Regular classes begin on September 21.

 Youth Group Pizza
Father Mark and Eric & Sabrina Laine invite all the youth of St. Mark's in grades 7-12 for pizza on Sunday, September 14 at 11:30 (after church).  New faces are especially welcome!  No sign up, no charge...just come to have some fun and food, and to reconnect with one another after our summer of recreation (and ramp building).

Can you help with school supplies for needy kids?
We are collecting all kinds of school supplies for needy students in the Whitney Point school district (our own Laura Chestnut is one of the principals there).  Sue Surgent, our Stewardship chairperson, appreciates your help!  There will be a box at church as you shop for items in August and early September.  Thank you!

Blessing of the Animals October 4
An early note for the calendars of our animal lovers.  On Saturday, October 4, we'll have a 5 pm Eucharist & Pet Blessing.  All God's critters are welcome.  And we would also like to remember departed pets in this service.  So please give Father Mark the names of your beloved animals who have died, and he (and we) will remember them at the altar.

Calling All Bad Girls - and Those Who Want  to Be
We will begin our studies on Wednesday, October 1st at 7:00 p.m. at the Peterson's home (8 Poplar Hill Rd).

The book we will be working with is Unveiling Mary Magdalene by Liz Curtis Higgs.  It is available online and at local book stores.

I have discovered over the summer that Mary Magdalene is far more complex than I had thought, and her story is fascinating.  I'm very much looking forward to sharing it, and the discussions it will generate with you all.
