A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:
Let the earth open and salvation bud forth. (Isaiah 45:8)
Today is the feastday of St. John of the Cross, a 16th century mystic who would have greeted these words with open arms. He believed, as did St. Paul, that God reveals Himself in at least two books the book of the Bible and the book of Nature.
Here, God commands the Earth to open, so that salvation should come forth from it. And this is another interesting passage that links the anxious waiting for our Savior to His death. For, Earth opened that Jesus would come forth in His resurrected body. It is through His death and resurrection that our salvation is assured.
This season, when you look at the creation, at what God has wrought, rejoice and be exceedingly glad at the wonders that are around you, for these are all the works of God. Remember, God is present in all of His creation; there is not a thing that happens that He does not know about. Look beyond the creation and find there the masterful, loving Creator who waits for all of us to come to Him.
