September! The Season is Changing

September is here - bringing cooler nights, some color change in the landscape, and early morning fog at Sage Hill...located at the foot of the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. A lovely spot to call our earthly home. God is one fine artist!

Come the 22nd we will be in the Autumnal Equinox...

To be exact, the Northern Hemisphere enters fall at exactly 10:21 a.m. EDT, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The day — which has roughly an equal amount of nighttime and daytime — marks the official end of summer and the beginning of Autumn.

In Latin, the word equinox is composed of two words meaning "equal" and "night." This hints at the fact that during the equinox the Sun crosses the so-called "celestial equator," an imaginary line over the equator that signifies when night and day are equal to one another.

The autumnal equinox occurs in September every year, most often on the 22nd, 23rd or 24th. There is also a spring, or vernal equinox, every year. The solstices — one during summer, another during winter — are the counterparts of the equinox. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, while the winter is the shortest day.

The Equinox is actually a public holiday all over the world and has its beginning's in 1948.

Gardens at Sage Hill and most other locations now will consist of greens of all variety, winter squash, parsnips, beets, turnips, sweet potatoes, beans and peas of different kinds. Oh...and don't overlook the okra!!

Now is the time to transition from a summer food diet to warm/hot and spicy foods.....stews, soups, roasted and baked....our bodies need a totally different set of nutrients for the season of autumn/winter than for spring/summer.

If you are in the country or on a farm...pay close attention to a wild plant called Ground cherries....low growing relative of the tomato and tomatillo...just as the tomatillo they have a thin papery, straw colored husk which is peeled off before eating. They are a sweet, yellow/orange fruit that is perfectly safe to eat ...cooked, raw, use like a tomato in other dishes.....makes a super tomato pie.

GMO = Genetically Modified Organism

GMOs are created in a lab, by inserting a gene from one organism into another unrelated organism, producing plants and animals that would never occur in nature. No long-term safety studies have been done on humans, but animal studies link the consumption of GMOs to an increase in allergies, kidney and liver disease, ADHD, cancer, infertility, chronic immune disorders and more.

Lying Labels...continues...

A new term disguises High Fructose Corn Syrup...

The Corn Refiners Association(CRA) has resorted to creating a new label for HFCS by calling it simply "fructose syrup" or just "fructose" because numerous scientific studies have linked it to obesity, Type 2 diabetes and autism.

HFCS is a highly processed chemical sweetener used in many processed foods such as breads, cookies, candy, condiments, and soft drinks. It is cheaper than sugar, which is the main reason manufacturers use it.

Standard HFCS contains from 42 to 55 percent fructose.

The new term is being used when foods contain HFCS-90, which has "just" 90 percent fructose. Identifying HFCS-90 as an ingredient bizarrely gives food makers a green light to uses statements such as "contains no HFCS" on the product label.

Bart Hoebel, a phychology professor at Princeton University reports..."when rats are drinking HFCS at levels well below those in soda pop, they all become obese; every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high fat diet you never see this...they never gain extra weight.

Read your labels and research the words....just because it is written does not make it "Truth!"
