When we reflect upon our Theme: “Sing to the Lord a new song,” we might think that we should at once answer the question: “What is the new song?”
However, the fact is that we dare not bypass the first word in the divine command: “Sing!”, even though that is contrary to our sinful nature. By nature true singing is not something that we enjoy. We would rather sit in the corner with a grouchy look on our face, and refuse to give God the praise which He deserves. The devil would be pleased most of all if all people were not only robbed of their inclination to sing, but even if they were robbed of their ability to speak.
However, the divine nature is something entirely different! The Son of God is the eternal Word, and is pleased with all God-pleasing speaking and singing. We want to separate ourselves from the resentful, malicious type of silence which is the bad habit that the devil encourages, and instead align ourselves with the holy angels, who never grow weary of glorifying God’s name with song and music, for we have so very much to sing about.
Lord, I will sing of Thy goodness as long as my tongue can move. Amen.
