Wednesday 19 March

Next week, we welcome Paul Gooch ARPS to BPS. He will be presenting his talk entitled A Tale of 3 Photobooks.

Paul says the following about his talk:

Over a three-year period, I created 3 iterations of my photobook. I initially created a 52-page photobook, which was submitted to the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) for an Associate distinction assessment (ARPS).

It was always my intention to use the ARPS distinction process as a learning curve and a stepping stone towards self-publication. The final iteration of the photobook expanded to 188 pages, with the specific intention of self-publication and selling the book to a wider audience.

My first attempt at a photobook for the ARPS distinction process was not perfect. I show example spreads and describe the mistakes I made.  I then talk at some length about the approach & learning curve I undertook. I describe the adjustments I made and improvements to the photobook, both as a photographer and as photobook designer / author. I show further example spreads to illustrate the improvements.

I then talk about the approach I took to extend the photobook beyond scope of the RPS Associate submission and to eventually self-publish the final product. The process of extending the photobook content to 188 pages was carefully considered to be totally complementary with the Associate distinction submission, and at the same time appeal to a broader more commercial audience. I show further example spreads to illustrate the final self-published photobook.

WCPF Knightshayes Trophy
The 2025 WCPF Knightshayes Trophy was held last Sunday. This is a Federation competition open to all members of WCPF Clubs who can submit up to two prints on a subject set annually by the WCPF President, who also judges the competition. This year's theme was "Two, Double, Twin". Two BPS members did particularly well, gaining Highly Commended awards, namely Rachel Domleo and Mike Martin. Their award-winning images are shown below:

PSA Nature PDI Competition - Round 2
More results from the PSA PDI Competition:

Nature

A disappointing result. After two rounds, we are languishing in 15th place in the top tier of this competition, with 131 points, some distance behind the top club with a seemingly un-assailable score of 159! The two clubs in joint 2nd each have 148 points. However, with 6 images each scoring up to a maximum of 15 points, or a total of 90- points up for grabs in round 3, nothing is impossible.

We clearly need to up our game in this section :(

Congratulations to Ralph for our only awarded image, scoring a top 15.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
I received the following from Sue O'Connell:

The original table of results for the Bristol Salon (Issue 620) missed out a Selector’s Choice for one of my images (as did the Scorecard I received). The only clue I had about this was the second certificate received! Ralph has now confirmed that I received TWO selectors’ Awards (both from Adrian Lines), the second being for a colour print (the first was for a Monochrome print).

Well done, Sue.
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
