Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
CHRIST DIED FOR US
On this day, we remember the many who have fallen in defense of our cities, states, and nation. Those rows of grave markers represent the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that "we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" (1 Timothy 2:2).
In thanksgiving, let's do more than have a moment of silence or salute a flag, but rather seek to be worthy citizens of the country these soldiers died to defend -- by being willing to put forth effort to serve community and nation with our God-given talents; by working for our neighbor's benefit rather than for personal gain.
But we also keep in mind today the One who gave His own life that the whole world might be at peace -- at peace with God. For Christ our Savior has given us a security that cannot be shattered by the outbreak of any war or the attack of any national enemy. Every cross that stands above every grave reminds us of the battle He fought with hell and Satan -- and won.
Therefore we desire to be productive citizens not only of our country, but of God's Church too. For in serving one another we show our love for Him with heart and hands and voices.
